A modified sideband peak count based nonlinear ultrasonic technique for material characterization

SeHyuk Park et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation (NDT&E) is widely used in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). While the conventional linear ultrasonic technique is suitable for detecting macro-scale defects, it often fails to detect micro-scale defects. The newly developed nonlinear ultrasonic technique called SPI shows more robustness and ease of implementation compared to the SPC-I technique. SPI technique is suitable as a general-purpose damage monitoring tool for less skilled users, while SPC-I technique offers more sensitivity and flexibility for in-depth damage analysis in materials.

An improved nonlinear ultrasonic technique for detecting and monitoring impact induced damage in composite plates

H. Alnuaimi et al.

Summary: An improved technique for sensing damage initiation and progression in thermoplastic resin composite plate specimens was presented in this study. The new method includes introducing the narrow band SPC-I technique, using non-permanently adhered gel-coupled PZT transducers, and employing higher sampling rate equipment. This improved technique provides more reliable and consistent results in monitoring damage progression.

Nonlinear Acoustic Technique for Monitoring Porosity in Additively Manufactured Parts

SeHyuk Park et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrasonic waves were used to probe the response of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel samples as their porosity changes. Both linear and nonlinear analyses were used for damage characterization, and the effectiveness of the SPC-I technique in monitoring porosity levels was discussed.

Detection of initiation of corrosion induced damage in concrete structures using nonlinear ultrasonic techniques

Thirumalaiselvi Arumaikani et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the detection of corrosion damage in reinforced concrete elements using nonlinear ultrasonic techniques. The study finds that the sideband peak count-index based NLU technique outperforms other NLU techniques for detecting the onset of corrosion and micro-crack formation.

Monitoring damage in composite plates from crack initiation to macro-crack propagation combining linear and nonlinear ultrasonic techniques

Hamad Alnuaimi et al.

Summary: A holistic technique combining linear and nonlinear ultrasonic techniques was proposed for monitoring damage in composite plates. By using multiple sets of specimens made of different materials, it was found that linear and nonlinear ultrasonic parameters exhibit different monitoring effects in various stages of damage progression.

Dynamic damage identification for a full-scale parabolic tuff barrel vault under differential settlements of the supports

Anna Castellano et al.

Summary: This study experimentally analyzed the vibration response of a full-scale polycentric near parabolic tuff barrel vault under differential settlements of the abutments. By continuously monitoring the static and dynamic responses of the vault through a large number of sensors, the study used a dynamic damage identification (DDI) procedure to detect, locate, and quantitatively assess the damage. The results showed the effectiveness of the proposed DDI approach in identifying damage and crack hinge positions related to the experimental and theoretical collapse mechanism of the vault.

Nonlinear ultrasonics-based technique for monitoring damage progression in reinforced concrete structures

Sukanya Basu et al.

Summary: This study investigates damage progression in reinforced concrete structures using linear and nonlinear ultrasonic techniques. It is found that some nonlinear ultrasonic techniques are efficient in monitoring damage progression, while changes in linear parameters are often insignificant. The new nonlinear ultrasonic technique SPC-I shows superior performance at early stages of damage, but gradually loses its advantage at higher damage stages.

Linear and Nonlinear Ultrasonic Techniques for Monitoring Stress-Induced Damages in Concrete

Anna Castellano et al.

Summary: When the stress in concrete exceeds a certain threshold, microcracks are formed and gradually develop into macrocracks, leading to the failure of concrete structures. This study monitors stress-induced damage in concrete using ultrasonic techniques, with the nonlinear ultrasonic parameter SPC-I proving to be more sensitive to changes in material structures.
