Evidence of large sturgeons in the Paleocene of North America

Chase Doran Brownstein

Summary: Ray-finned fishes, including sturgeons and paddlefishes, are ancient lineages with fossil records stretching over 200 million years. This study describes sturgeon fossils found in two geological units in North America, which are less than 10 million years younger than the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. The fossils establish the long history of large body size in sturgeons and reveal their significance as some of the largest freshwater inhabitants during the recovery period after the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction.

Late Cretaceous sturgeons (Acipenseridae) from North America, with two new species from the Tanis site in the Hell Creek Formation of North Dakota

Eric J. Hilton et al.

Summary: Although the Cretaceous is considered a crucial period for the evolutionary transition of freshwater fish fauna in North America, the fossil record is scarce. In this study, two well-preserved sturgeon fossils were discovered in North Dakota, providing valuable insights into the evolution of Acipenseridae during this critical time.

Calibrating the zenith of dinosaur diversity in the Campanian of the Western Interior Basin by CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb geochronology

Summary: This study presents a high-resolution chronostratigraphic framework for the Upper Cretaceous terrestrial strata of North America's Western Interior Basin, revealing significant age overlap between key fossil-bearing formations. The results support a connection between paleoecology and fossil diversities, helping to overcome chronostratigraphic ambiguities and test proposed models of latitudinal provinciality of dinosaur taxa during the Campanian.
