The impact of neighborhood social disadvantage on abdominal aortic aneurysm severity and management

Lucas Mota et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that socioeconomic disparities affect the severity and management of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) disease. This study examines the impact of the area deprivation index (ADI), a measure of neighborhood deprivation, on AAA severity and management.

Impact of neighborhood social disadvantage on the presentation and management of peripheral artery disease

Lucas Mota et al.

Summary: Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the area deprivation index (ADI) on the severity and management of peripheral artery disease (PAD). The results showed that patients living in neighborhoods with higher adversity had more advanced disease at presentation and lower rates of revascularization.

Females are less likely to receive best medical therapy for stroke prevention before and after carotid revascularization than males

Sanuja Bose et al.

Summary: A study found a significant discrepancy in the proportion of females versus males receiving preoperative medication therapy for stroke prevention before carotid artery revascularization. Patients without medication therapy had worse in-hospital outcomes, highlighting the importance of improving preoperative adherence to stroke prevention guidelines.

Differences in Perioperative Outcomes after Carotid Revascularization between White and Non-white Patients

Christina L. Cui et al.

Summary: A large-scale analysis of a nationally representative cohort reveals racial disparities in perioperative outcomes of carotid revascularization. Non-white patients had higher rates of stroke, unplanned return to the operating room, and restenosis compared to white patients. Sub-analysis showed higher rates of stroke/death in non-white patients undergoing carotid artery stenting and higher rates of unplanned return to the operating room and restenosis in non-white patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy.

The Intellectual Roots Of Current Knowledge On Racism And Health: Relevance To Policy And The National Equity Discourse

Ruth Enid Zambrana et al.

Summary: Research on racism and health has progressed in recent decades, highlighting the importance of social determinants of health, life-course approaches, structural racism, and other upstream factors in driving health inequities. However, there is discomfort in public health and medical circles regarding racism research, including opposition to using racial terminology. National reports on racial and ethnic inequities in health have also given limited attention to the role of racism. It is crucial to recognize the central role of racism in the national discourse on racial inequities in health and promote paradigm shifts to address the roots of racism and health inequities.

Karen E. Joynt Maddox et al.

Summary: In Missouri, COVID-19 case rates and mortality rates were significantly higher among non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic Other/Unknown race individuals than among non-Hispanic White residents, even after accounting for social and clinical risk factors, population density, and travel patterns during COVID-19.

Combining education and income into a socioeconomic position score for use in studies of health inequalities

Marie Hella Lindberg et al.

Summary: This paper aims to develop a composite score for subjective socioeconomic position (SEP) based on education and income, and examine its performance in predicting health-related quality of life (HRQoL) inequalities. Education was found to have the most influence on SEP, while income primarily added weight for the highest income category. The analysis of the composite SEP score indicated a clear social gradient in HRQoL measures.

Transcarotid artery revascularization is associated with similar outcomes to carotid endarterectomy regardless of patient risk status

George Q. Zhang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the perioperative outcomes of carotid revascularization procedures in high-risk and standard-risk patients and their association with CMS criteria. The results showed that TCAR had lower odds of perioperative stroke compared to CEA in high-risk patients, while TFCAS had higher odds. In standard-risk patients, TCAR and TFCAS had similar risks, but both were lower than CEA.

Demystifying the outcome disparities in carotid revascularization: Utilization of experienced centers

Russyan Mark Mabeza et al.

Summary: This study found that patients of color and those with Medicaid or lack of insurance had lower rates of utilizing high-volume centers for carotid revascularization. Further systemic efforts to ensure equitable access to experienced centers may reduce observed disparities in carotid revascularization.
