Lifestyle mediators of associations among siestas, obesity, and metabolic health

Barbara Vizmanos et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between siestas and obesity, considering siesta duration and whether siesta traits and/or lifestyle factors mediate this association. The results showed that long siestas were associated with higher BMI, waist circumference, fasting glucose, blood pressure, and increased prevalence of MetS. However, short siestas were associated with a lower probability of elevated blood pressure. Various factors, including smoking, sleep and eating schedules, energy intake, and siesta location, mediated the association of siestas with obesity and MetS.

Mechanism of the association between sleep quality and mortality in middle-aged and older adults: A prospective study analysis of the UK Biobank

Wei Hu et al.

Summary: This study found that poor sleep quality is associated with an increased risk of mortality, and this association may be mediated by lifestyle, psychosocial, and biological factors. Data from 205,654 participants showed that poor sleep quality was associated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and cancer mortality. Lifestyle, psychosocial, and biological factors were found to mediate this association, suggesting that adopting healthy lifestyles and maintaining psychosocial well-being are cost-effective interventions to lower the risk of death.

Hyperlipidemia and hypothyroidism

Xin Su et al.

Summary: Hypothyroidism is closely associated with increased serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Thyroid hormones play a role in modulating cholesterol production, transformation, and clearance, but the underlying mechanism of thyroid-stimulating hormone's participation in hyperlipidemia remains unclear. Other studies have shown that hypothyroidism-related hyperlipidemia is associated with down-regulated thyroid hormones and up-regulated thyroid-stimulating hormone in the bloodstream. Additionally, hypothyroidism contributes to dysfunctional high-density lipoprotein particles.

Summary: The prevalence of hyperuricemia is increasing in mainland China, and excess body weight and alcohol consumption are major modifiable risk factors. Based on a national survey, weight loss and reduction of alcohol consumption are effective strategies for preventing hyperuricemia, but there are significant differences in population attributable fractions based on gender and geographic location.

Reduced Sensitivity to Thyroid Hormone Is Associated with Diabetes and Hypertension

Ladan Mehran et al.

Summary: Recently, reduced sensitivity to thyroid hormone has become more common in the general population and is thought to be associated with metabolic parameters. This study found that TFQI, a new index for thyroid hormone resistance, is significantly associated with high blood pressure and diabetes in euthyroid subjects. However, caution is needed when interpreting the results for diabetes, and further studies are necessary.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between thyroid function and hyperuricemia in a large Chinese population, with a focus on the influences of gender and age. The results showed that the risk of hyperuricemia was positively associated with higher TSH levels in both males and females, regardless of age. Older females showed a higher risk of hyperuricemia compared to younger females. Additionally, males with higher TSH levels were more vulnerable to hyperuricemia risk.

Association between decreased thyroid stimulating hormone and hyperuricemia in type 2 diabetic patients with early-stage diabetic kidney disease

Xiaomeng Feng et al.

Summary: This study found that in type 2 diabetic patients with early-stage DKD, a decreased TSH level is negatively correlated with an increase in SUA, and independently associated with higher SUA levels, as well as significantly linked to hyperuricemia after adjusting for confounding factors. These findings suggest that thyroid hormones, especially TSH, may play a role in regulating uric acid metabolism in patients with early-stage DKD.

Sensitivity to Thyroid Hormone Indices Are Closely Associated With NAFLD

Shuiqing Lai et al.

Summary: FT3/FT4 and TFQI(FT3) were positively correlated with TG, TC, and LDL-C levels, and negatively correlated with HDL-C level. FT3, FT3/FT4, and TFQI(FT3) were positively associated with dyslipidemia and NAFLD. TFQI(FT3) and FT3/FT4 performed better in predicting NAFLD compared to TFQI(FT4), but had low sensitivity and specificity at the optimal cut-points. TFQI(FT4) showed no association with dyslipidemia and NAFLD.

Resistance to Thyroid Hormone Beta: A Focused Review

Theodora Pappa et al.

Summary: Resistance to thyroid hormone is defined by impaired sensitivity to TH, mainly caused by mutations in the THRB gene, leading to elevated serum TH levels despite normal thyroid function. Management is tailored to individual symptoms as there is currently no therapy to fully correct the TR beta defect. Phenotypic variability exists among individuals with different mutations and tissue types.

Summary: Uric acid is mainly synthesized in the liver, intestines, and vascular endothelium, with the kidney playing a dominant role in its excretion. Hyperuricemia is significantly associated with the development of the metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Lowering uric acid levels may slow the progression of these diseases.

Correlation between Thyroid Homeostasis and Obesity in Subclinical Hypothyroidism: Community-Based Cross-Sectional Research

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association of thyroid homeostasis with obesity in subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) population. Results showed that secretory capacity of the thyroid gland and Jostel's thyrotropin index were negatively correlated with obesity indices, while the reciprocal of the thyrotroph thyroid hormone resistance index was positively correlated with BMI. After adjustment, the associations between thyroid function indexes and BMI persisted, suggesting a potential link between low levels of thyroid homeostasis and overall obesity in SCH.

Summary: This study found that in euthyroid individuals, thyroid hormones have a significant impact on renal function, especially decreased sensitivity to thyroid hormones can lead to reduced renal function. The new composite index PTFQI(FT4) may be more reflective of the association with renal function compared to individual TSH or FT4 parameters.
