Improving the flame retardancy efficiency and mechanical properties of the intumescent flame retarded low-density polyethylene by the dual actions of polyurea microencapsulation and aluminum hypophosphite

Licong Jiang et al.

Summary: Microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) and microencapsulated aluminum hypophosphite (MAHP) with polyurea were prepared, and flame retarded polyethylene composites were manufactured. LDPE composites with 17.3 wt% of MAPP and 3.9 wt% of MAHP achieved a LOI value of 27.3% and met the V-0 standard. The PHRR and THR were significantly decreased, and the tensile strength of LDPE/MAPP-MAHP was higher than LDPE/APP-AHP due to good dispersion and compatibility.

Preparation and flame retardance of polyethylene composites with microencapsulated resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate), red phosphorus and magnesium hydroxide

Chung-Guk Choe et al.

Summary: PE modification with flame retardant resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP) is important for public safety and environmental protection. This study proposes a microencapsulation method using melamine-urea-formalin resin as shell material to improve the compatibility between PE and RDP, resulting in PE composites with microencapsulated RDP (MCRDP), red phosphorus (MCRP), and magnesium hydroxide (MH). The characterization shows that MCRDP particles with homogeneous distribution of particle sizes are successfully fabricated. The best flame retardance is achieved in the PE/20%MCRDP/5%MCRP/5%MH composite, which exhibits higher decomposition temperature due to P-N synergy effect.

The Effect of Ash Silanization on the Selected Properties of Rigid Polyurethane Foam/Coal Fly Ash Composites

Beata Zygmunt-Kowalska et al.

Summary: According to the European Union's assumptions, achieving climate neutrality is planned by 2050. To accomplish this, a document called the European Green Deal was established, which includes a set of policies by the European Commission. One of these policies involves a circular economy that considers the use of waste in subsequent production cycles. In this study, composites of rigid polyurethane foam with 10 wt.% of modified fly ash as a filler were produced to meet the latest trends in environmentally friendly materials and waste utilization in building material production. The modified fly ash showed good results in various tests, particularly the samples modified with 1% and 2% silane solution. The use of modified fly ash in polyurethane foams can be a viable method of waste disposal and can enhance the usability of these composites.

Summary: This work investigates the mechanical strength and effectiveness of a char barrier in providing fire retardancy for epoxy resin. By using dynamic mechanical analysis and X-ray tomography, it is found that the hybrid of metal-organic framework and graphene oxide significantly improves the strength of the char. The multi-scale porous structure within carbonaceous char also contributes to the enhanced strength. The study further verifies the applicability of a proposed char reinforced mechanism by applying layered double hydroxide and nano clay as synergists.

Effects of Modified Layered Double Hydroxides on the Thermal Degradation and Combustion Behaviors of Intumescent Flame Retardant Polyethylene Nanocomposites

Tiefeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The flame retardant effectiveness of Mg-Al LDH in polyethylene (PE) was improved by introducing 2-carboxy ethyl (phenyl) phosphinic acid (CEPPA) as a flame retardant modifier to prepare CEPPA-intercalated LDH (CLDH), which was then dispersed in PE through melt blending. The compact and fully developed char of the PE/IFR/CLDH composites were mainly attributed to the reactions between CLDH and the intumescent flame retardant (IFR), enhancing the flame retardancy of the composites.
