Performance comparison of black liquor gasification and oxidation in supercritical water from thermodynamic, environmental, and techno-economic perspectives

Jiamin Liang et al.

Summary: By utilizing supercritical water gasification and supercritical water oxidation technology, the black liquor can be converted into hydrogen-rich gas or heat energy, reducing its impact on the environment. A pulp mill integrated with black liquor SCWG and SCWO subsystems was designed and analyzed thermodynamically and economically. The results showed that the optimal reaction temperature for the system is 800 degrees Celsius under specified conditions.

Thermodynamic and environmental analysis for multi-component supercritical thermal fluid generation by supercritical water gasification of oilfield wastewater

Zhiyong Peng et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel process modeling for the Multi-component supercritical thermal fluid (MCSCTF) generation system was developed based on the supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of oilfield wastewater, and the environmental impact of the system was evaluated using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The use of segmented air supply and rational heat exchangers distribution improved the exergy efficiency and reduced the Global Warming Potential (GWP). The sensitivity analysis showed that optimizing system parameters can further improve the exergy efficiency and reduce the GWP.

Juxiang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, degradable and reprocessable phenolic thermosets (PRTs) were successfully synthesized by introducing reversible acetal bonds. By adjusting the chain mobility induced by dynamic acetal motifs, the mechanical strengths of the PRTs could be controlled, and more moderate reprocessing and degradation conditions were achieved. This research provides insights for the development of efficient degradable and reprocessable dynamic network materials.

Impact of declining renewable energy costs on electrification in low-emission scenarios

Gunnar Luderer et al.

Summary: The rapid cost degression in photovoltaics, wind-power, and battery storage, along with climate policies like carbon pricing to reach the Paris Climate targets, could make electricity cheaper than carbon-based fuels. This could lead to electricity accounting for nearly two-thirds of global energy use by mid-century, inducing a fundamental transformation in energy systems.

Characteristic of food waste gasification in supercritical water for hydrogen production

Wen Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, an experimental investigation was conducted to evaluate the gasification characteristics of food waste in supercritical water. The results showed that higher reaction temperature and longer residence time promoted the gasification of food waste. The addition of catalysts improved the gasification performance by converting more liquid intermediates into gaseous products.

Thermodynamic, environmental analysis and comprehensive evaluation of supercritical water gasification of biomass fermentation residue

Jingwei Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the thermodynamic and environmental performance of supercritical water gasification for hydrogen production using residue from a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process. The results show that increasing temperature and decreasing residue concentration can enhance the hydrogen production rate. Additionally, two methods to improve energy efficiency, including recycling waste heat and reheating cycle, are proposed.

Catalytic gasification of phenol in supercritical water with different metal cations

Wen Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of metal cations on the supercritical water gasification of phenol and found that metal cations increased the yield of CO2 and the efficiency of carbon gasification, facilitating the conversion of phenol to small molecule gaseous products. Ni2+ exhibited the strongest catalytic effect, and Mg2+, Mn2+, and Ni2+ were transformed into recyclable metal hydroxides and metal oxides.

Heat, Electricity, and Fuel Gas Ploy-Generation System on an Island based on Plastic Waste Gasification in Supercritical Water

Weizuo Wang et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution in the ocean poses a serious threat to the health of marine and terrestrial life, and recycling it on land is challenging. A system to recycle plastic in situ on an island was proposed, converting the plastics into fuel gases. Epoxy plastics, one of the most common thermoset plastics in the ocean, were gasified in supercritical water using concentrated solar energy, and the resulting fuel gas can be stored for future use.

Recycling Thermoset Epoxy Resin Using Alkyl-Methyl-Imidazolium Ionic Liquids as Green Solvents

Rocio L. Perez et al.

Summary: A solvent-based green recycling procedure using ionic liquids and alcohols was reported for the recycling of thermoset epoxy resins and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites under mild conditions. The study evaluated the swelling and depolymerization capacity of the materials in the presence of different alkyl-methyl-imidazolium ILs and alcohols. Complete dissolution of both TERs and CFRECs was achieved in 150 minutes at 150 degrees Celsius under atmospheric pressure. Recovery and reuse of the recycled monomer after dissolution were also examined, demonstrating similar mechanical properties to the parent TER and successful recovery of carbon fibers from CFRECs.
