Maternal effects drive intestinal development beginning in the embryonic period on the basis of maternal immune and microbial transfer in chickens

Haizhou Gong et al.

Summary: By intervening in the nutrition of hens, we found that it positively affects the immunity of hens, hatching rate, and the growth of offspring chicks. The study reveals that maternal immune advantages are transferred to the offspring through immune factors in egg whites and yolks, and the transfer of maternal microbes affects the embryonic gut development as well as the immune system of offspring.

Fecal microbiota transplantation improves chicken growth performance by balancing jejunal Th17/Treg cells

Ziyu Ma et al.

Summary: Intestinal inflammation is a concerning issue in chicken production worldwide and is associated with Th17/Treg cell imbalance. This study found that reshaping gut microbiota through fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) improved chicken growth by balancing Th17/Treg cells. Transferring fecal microbiota from healthy donors with better growth performance and abundant Lactobacillus to young chicks significantly increased growth performance, decreased Th17 cell-associated factors and cytokines, and increased Treg cell-associated factors and cytokines in the jejunum.

Hen raising helps chicks establish gut microbiota in their early life and improve microbiota stability after H9N2 challenge

Xiaobing Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the gut microbiota composition between hen-reared and separately reared chicks, and found that the diversity of gut microbes in hen-reared chicks was greater. After H9N2 exposure, the gut microbiota of hen-reared chicks was more stable compared to separately reared chicks.

Key bacterial taxa and metabolic pathways affecting gut short-chain fatty acid profiles in early life

Naoki Tsukuda et al.

Summary: This study explored the early life relationships between SCFA and gut microbiota by analyzing faecal samples collected from 12 subjects over the first two years of life. The research identified three distinct phases of SCFA profiles and their associations with specific gut microbiota. The results showed that butyrate production was linked to Clostridiales species and breastfeeding cessation, while formate production was associated with infant-type bifidobacterial species and HMO-derived fucose.
