Automated assessment of the substantia nigra on susceptibility map-weighted imaging using deep convolutional neural networks for diagnosis of Idiopathic Parkinson's disease

Dong Hoon Shin et al.

Summary: A diagnostic algorithm based on convolutional neural networks was implemented and evaluated for interpreting nigrosome 1 susceptibility map-weighted imaging in determining nigrostriatal degeneration in idiopathic Parkinson's disease. The deep learning-based algorithm showed comparable performance to visual assessment by an experienced neuroradiologist in detecting abnormalities of nigrosome 1 on SMwI, suggesting its potential in clinical applications.

Summary: Parkinson disease is characterized by loss of dopaminergic cells in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. Recent advances in MRI technology have enabled elucidation of underlying pathophysiological changes in the nigral structure, contributing to improved diagnosis and monitoring of the disease progression.

Macular microcirculation characteristics in Parkinson's disease evaluated by OCT-Angiography: a literature review

Evita Evangelia Christou et al.

Summary: The retina may serve as a predictive factor for neurodegenerative disorders, with recent use of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) in studying macular microcirculation changes in Parkinson's disease (PD). While preliminary evidence suggests OCT-A could be a useful biomarker for cerebral vasculature in PD, further research is needed to confirm its predictive value in clinical practice.
