Anxiety and depression in colorectal cancer survivors: Are there differences by sexual orientation?

Ulrike Boehmer et al.

Summary: The study found that sexual minority survivors had worse health-related anxiety and anxiety compared to heterosexual survivors, but these differences were no longer statistically significant after adjusting for covariates. Individual, social and contextual characteristics, cancer characteristics, and psychological responses to cancer explained about 44% of the variance in anxiety and 60% of the variance in depression. There are modifiable factors associated with anxiety and depression that can be changed to improve cancer survivorship among diverse survivors.

A national study of alcohol consumption patterns among population-based US cancer survivors compared with cancer-free individuals

Junrui Lyu et al.

Summary: This study examined alcohol consumption behaviors among adult cancer survivors using NHANES data and compared them with cancer-free individuals. The findings showed that cancer survivors were less likely to be current drinkers and more likely to be former drinkers compared to cancer-free individuals. Among the different cancer types, cervical cancer survivors had a higher likelihood of binge drinking, especially among women aged >= 55 years. Public health strategies are needed to reduce alcohol consumption in cervical cancer survivors.

Self-assessment of health status among lesbian, gay, and bisexual cancer survivors in the United States

Yannan Li et al.

Summary: Research in the United States has shown that there are health disparities in cancer survivorship among the lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) population. LGB cancer survivors, particularly bisexuals, tend to have poorer physical and mental health, higher rates of depressive disorders, and worse sleep quality compared to heterosexual counterparts. These findings suggest a need for larger studies to address disparities and improve survivorship in LGB populations.
