Structural topology optimization with an adaptive design domain

Multi-functional topology optimization of Victoria cruziana veins

Summary: This study proposes a multi-functional and large-scale topology optimization method to investigate the morphomechanics of Victoria cruziana veins. The results suggest that increasing branching order improves nutrient transport efficiency, and the gradient variation of circumferential vein sizes contributes to leaf stiffness. Biomimetic leaves fabricated with 3D printing technique were used to validate theoretical findings.

Topology of leaf veins: Experimental observation and computational morphogenesis
