Influence of microstructure on fatigue crack propagation behaviors of Al-xCu-1.5Li-X alloys

Ding-ding Lu et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluates the fatigue crack propagation behaviors of Al-Cu-Li cold-rolled sheets with different Cu contents. The increase in Cu contents reduces the threshold value of fatigue crack growth as secondary particles induce microcrack initiation and provides more opportunities for crack deflection due to recrystallized grains. Additionally, Brass-orientated grains with low Schmid factor force the crack to change propagation direction, preventing further crack propagation. Compared to Goss-orientated grains with small tilt and twist angles, cracks are more likely to deflect at the boundaries with larger tilt angle differences between adjacent grains.

Changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloys induced by Fe ion irradiation at a high He generation rate

Peng Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the defect evolution and hardening behavior of high strength double-phase titanium alloys Ti-6Al-4V under different damage doses. The results show that there are different dependences between bubble density and precipitate length, and irradiation hardening shows a positive correlation with damage dose.

On the interplay of elastic anisotropy and fracture toughness anisotropy in fracture of single and multiphase polycrystals

Hirshikesh Hirshikesh et al.

Summary: This work presents a phase field model for understanding crack propagation in a brittle polycrystalline material during quasi-static loading. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of elastic anisotropy and fracture toughness anisotropy on crack propagation. The model agrees well with similar studies and is applied to simulate fracture in dual phase brittle polycrystals.

Insights on low cycle fatigue crack formation and propagation mechanism: A microstructurally-sensitive modeling

Kai Song et al.

Summary: A novel model for revealing the low cycle fatigue (LCF) fracture mechanism was established using molecular dynamics, extended finite element method, and representative volume element technology. The model was able to accurately simulate LCF crack formation and propagation, and was validated using microstructural fractography and 3D X-ray computed tomography. The proposed model demonstrated potential in understanding the correlation between microstructure and LCF fracture mechanism, and identified different formation mechanisms for secondary cracks.

Anupam Neogi et al.

Summary: The study highlights the influence of internal twin-boundaries in lamellar gamma-TiAl alloys on crack advancement, with a focus on the propagation direction and dislocation emission at the crack tip. Different twin boundaries play distinct roles in crack propagation, contributing to the toughening of the material.

Characterization of Ductile Crack Growth Resistance Behaviour of Interstitial-Free Steel Sheet using Energy Dissipation Rate Parameter

S. K. Chandra et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the crack growth resistance parameter in a 1 mm thick interstitial-free steel sheet using the energy dissipation rate parameter R. A new method is adopted to determine the stationary value of energy dissipation rate R infinity, aiming to reduce the specimen geometry dependence of the energy dissipation results. The study aims to normalize the R-Delta a plots in order to minimize the influence of specimen geometry on the energy dissipation outcomes.
