A network-based investigation on the strong contact system of granular materials under isotropic and deviatoric stress states

Jiaying Liu et al.

Summary: The contact network between particles in granular materials can be analyzed using complex network metrics. This study conducted 3D DEM simulations of assemblies with different particle size distributions under isotropic and deviatoric loading. The topological characteristics of the network, such as cluster size and betweenness centrality, were captured for strong force subnetworks. It was found that the particle size distribution does not affect the overall network topology, and a strong network with a proper force threshold can exhibit percolation in all granular samples. Deviatoric states showed more consistent features in strong network topology than isotropic states, providing insights into the structural uniqueness of granular mechanics.

Machine learning bridges microslips and slip avalanches of sheared granular gouges

Gang Ma et al.

Summary: Understanding the relationship between microslips and macroscopic stress fluctuations is crucial for gaining insights into geophysical processes such as earthquakes. This study uses discrete element method simulations and a machine learning approach to quantitatively connect microslips to stress fluctuations. The data-driven model successfully predicts the magnitude of stress fluctuation by incorporating the spatial distribution of microslips. The findings shed light on the mechanisms governing earthquake nucleation and the dynamics of earthquake cycles.

Summary: Shear thickening of suspensions is studied using discrete-particle simulation, revealing the characteristics of the contact force network. The number of frictional contacts per particle has a one-to-one relationship with the suspension stress, and the suspension rheology is correlated with the topological structure of the contact network.

Relation between void ratio and contact fabric of granular soils

Yuxuan Wen et al.

Summary: This study uses the discrete element method to conduct a series of tests and finds a tight correlation between the void ratio and the fabric tensor of granular soils. By plotting the void ratio data against the first two invariants of the fabric tensor, a unique surface is obtained. The robustness of this relation is confirmed through testing samples with different initial void ratios under complex loading paths.

Liquefaction of granular materials in constant-volume cyclic shearing: Transition between solid-like and fluid-like states

Ming Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the evolution of internal structure during cyclic liquefaction of dense granular media through 3D-DEM simulations. The study reveals a fast transition to a fluid-like shear strain regime upon liquefaction, characterized by low shear modulus, decreasing dilatancy, and reduced shear viscosity. Various micro- and meso-scale descriptors are used to analyze the internal structure, and two possible criteria for exiting the fluid-like state based on excess pore pressure are discussed.

Quantifying local rearrangements in three-dimensional granular materials: Rearrangement measures, correlations, and relationship to stresses

Chongpu Zhai et al.

Summary: The study investigates the local rearrangements that occur during the deformation process of 3D granular materials under different boundary conditions. The results show that these rearrangements are correlated on a scale of three to four particle diameters, exhibit volumetric strain-shear strain and nonaffine displacement-rotation coupling, and may occur repeatedly during incremental sample strain. The findings suggest that local structure may play at least as important of a role as local stress in determining the nature of local rearrangements.

Effects of deviator strain histories on liquefaction of loose sand using DEM

Minyi Zhu et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of quasi-steady state or temporary liquefaction in undrained tests on loose sand, with pre-shearing histories showing the ability to stabilize soil behavior. The triggering of temporary liquefaction is effectively captured by the redundancy index, and samples exhibit a 'memory' with a limiting undrained stress path that pre-shearing cycles cannot surpass. Anisotropy induced by pure pre-shearing history results in higher initial peak values of deviator stress under undrained simulations. The ultimate stress ratio after temporary liquefaction remains constant regardless of pre-shearing history types and levels.

Un-jamming due to energetic instability: statics to dynamics

Stefan Luding et al.

Summary: Jamming/un-jamming transition in granular matter, involving solid- and fluid-like behavior, is a complex and ubiquitous phenomenon that requires a sound understanding. Besides pressure vanishing due to density decrease, yield can also occur if shear stress becomes too large for a given pressure. This mechanism is related to the loss of energy's convexity, causing irreversible re-arrangements of micro-structures. The study focuses on granular solid hydrodynamics with very soft materials, employing a simplified approach and combining insights from particle simulations to better understand the system transitions.

Quasistatic kinetic avalanches and self-organized criticality in deviatorically loaded granular media

Jordi Baro et al.

Summary: Granular media under quasistatic loading can reach a stable evolution state characterized by sudden transitions and scale-free avalanches. The statistical properties and susceptibilities of the system are nonuniversal, depending on interactions between particles, and exhibit lower scaling exponents for softer interactions, similar to observations in amorphous solids at their critical point. The relationship between microscopic and macroscopic variables, including external stress drops and internal potential energy release during kinetic avalanches, is discussed.
