Multilevel Monte Carlo method for topology optimization of flexoelectric composites with uncertain material properties

Khader M. Hamdia et al.

Summary: An efficient MLMC method for topology optimization of flexoelectric structures is proposed in this study, utilizing NURBS-based IGA to solve governing equations and GA for integer-valued optimization. Material properties and volume fraction uncertainties are taken into account, resulting in the determination of minimum number of simulations required under different error tolerances.

Weak enforcement of interface continuity and generalized periodicity in high-order electromechanical problems

Jordi Barcelo-Mercader et al.

Summary: A formulation for weak enforcement of continuity conditions at material interfaces in high-order problems using Nitsche's method is presented, extended to impose generalized periodicity conditions at unit cell boundaries of periodic structures. Optimal high-order convergence rates are achieved with an unfitted B-spline approximation, confirming the reliability of the method.

An isogeometric phase-field based shape and topology optimization for flexoelectric structures

Jorge Lopez et al.

Summary: This paper develops an isogeometric phase-field based shape and topology optimization method considering topological changes in a CAD-based framework. The diffuse interface is used to describe the boundaries of the geometry between material and void phases. The evolution of the phase-field is determined by solving the time-dependent Allen-Cahn equation. The method is demonstrated by optimizing flexoelectric structures and comparing the results with piezoelectric materials. The robustness of the method is shown through different geometries, boundary conditions, and material configurations.

Flexoelectric nanostructure design using explicit topology optimization

Weisheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an explicit topology optimization framework for flexoelectric structure design using the Moving Morphable Void (MMV) method combined with Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) and Trimming Surface Analysis (TSA). By optimizing the energy conversion factor and effective electric polarizability, the flexoelectric performance of nanostructures can be improved. The explicit framework coupled with IGA offers advantages such as satisfying the approximation requirements of flexoelectricity PDEs, avoiding numerical instability, and direct import to CAD systems.

C0-IPM with Generalised Periodicity and Application to Flexoelectricity-Based 2D Metamaterials

Oscar Balcells-Quintana et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a methodology to solve high-order PDE boundary value problems with generalised periodicity using the C-0 interior penalty method. The method is developed for analyzing flexoelectricity-based metamaterial unit cells, formalizing the problem statement and weak form, and providing details on the implementation of the local and macro conditions for generalised periodicity. Numerical examples demonstrate the high-order convergence of the method and its applicability in realistic problem settings.

A computational framework for topology optimisation of flexoelectricity at finite strains considering a multi-field micromorphic approach

R. Ortigosa et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel theoretical framework for designing flexoelectric energy harvesters under finite strain conditions. The framework combines a micromorphic continuum approach, a novel energy interpolation scheme, and an improved efficiency measure to accurately model and optimize the flexoelectric effects in highly deformable materials. The proposed framework overcomes the limitations of existing methods and offers new insights into the development of efficient and practical energy harvesters.

Geometrically polarized architected dielectrics with apparent piezoelectricity

A. Mocci et al.

Summary: Through appropriate geometric design, this study introduces a class of low area-fraction, bending-dominated metamaterials that exhibit apparent piezoelectricity even when the base material is not piezoelectric. The research quantifies the apparent piezoresponse and characterizes how lattice geometry, orientation, feature size and area fraction affect it. The work provides guidelines for endowing any dielectric metamaterial with apparent piezoelectricity, leading to non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and biocompatible materials for electromechanical transduction.

Topology optimization of flexoelectric composites using computational homogenization

X. Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduces a topology optimization framework for designing piezoelectric composites with enhanced flexoelectric constants. By leveraging a RVE-based computational homogenization approach, it is possible to analyze periodic composites with microstructures significantly smaller than the structure, and optimize a single RVE rather than the entire structure. Significant enhancements in electromechanical couplings are observed in different types of PZT-based composites, reaching improvements up to one order of magnitude larger than BTO.

Local versus global stress constraint strategies in topology optimization: A comparative study

Gustavo Assis da Silva et al.

Summary: This research compares local and global stress constraint strategies in topology optimization and finds that local strategies are less sensitive to the continuation procedure, leading to better quality results with fewer iterations compared to global strategies. It is also discovered that global strategies become competitive when using P values larger than 100, but require a slow continuation procedure. The local strategies based on the augmented Lagrangian method provide the best compromise between computational cost and performance.
