Full-field strain of regenerated bone tissue in a femoral fracture model

A. Karali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the strain distribution and load-bearing capacity in regenerating fractures using in situ XCT mechanics and DVC. The results showed significant variation and inhomogeneity in the 3D strain distribution in the regenerating tissues of the fracture gap, which was associated with the presence of unmineralised tissue observed in histological images.

Multiscale Strain Transfer in Cartilage

Manuela A. Boos et al.

Summary: The transfer of stress and strain signals between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and cells plays a crucial role in tissue morphogenesis, growth, and homeostasis. In cartilage tissue, the spatial variation of ECM molecules leads to nonuniform strain transfer, impacting the forces sensed by cells. However, the influence of these nonuniform forces on cartilage health and integrity is not fully understood. Understanding the multiscale strain transfer and structure-function relationships in cartilage is essential for comprehending cellular responses and tissue remodeling.

Avoiding artefacts in MicroCT imaging of collagen scaffolds: Effect of phosphotungstic acid (PTA)-staining and crosslink density

Kyung-Ah Kwon et al.

Summary: X-ray micro-computed tomography (mu-CT) is used to visualize the structure of hydrated collagen scaffolds by using phosphotungstic acid (PTA) as a contrast agent. The choice of processing and staining conditions is crucial for accurate visualization of crosslinked samples, while non-crosslinked or lightly crosslinked samples may cause structural artifacts.

Analysis of hydration and subchondral bone density on the viscoelastic properties of bovine articular cartilage

Joseph P. Crolla et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of cartilage water content and bone density on the viscoelasticity of articular cartilage. The results showed that a decrease in hydration leads to a decrease in loss stiffness, but there may be a non-linear relationship between hydration and storage stiffness. Higher bone density is associated with greater storage and loss stiffness.

Epidemiology of osteoarthritis

K. D. Allen et al.

Summary: This narrative review summarizes the current evidence on the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors of osteoarthritis (OA) at the person-level and joint-level. The review highlights the high prevalence of OA worldwide, with older individuals, women, certain racial and ethnic groups, and individuals with lower socioeconomic status being more affected. Obesity and joint injury are identified as modifiable risk factors with the strongest evidence. Other emerging topics with potential associations with OA risk or progression include specific vitamins and diets, high blood pressure, genetic factors, metformin use, bone mineral density, abnormal joint shape and malalignment, and lower muscle strength/quality. The review also emphasizes the heterogeneity of OA and the importance of understanding and defining OA phenotypes. Overall, OA is a prevalent condition with significant global impacts on health outcomes, necessitating efforts to mitigate obesity and joint injury risks.

Influence of the Mechanical Environment on the Regeneration of Osteochondral Defects

Sarah Davis et al.

Summary: Articular cartilage is crucial for joint function, but its limited self-repairing capacity poses a challenge for restoring its mechanical properties. Tissue engineering techniques using stem cells, growth factors, and biomaterials show promise for treating cartilage defects.

High resolution three-dimensional strain measurements in human articular cartilage

Jeffrey N. Clark et al.

Summary: This study explored the use of micro-CT and DVC to quantify three-dimensional strain fields in human articular cartilage, showing that the DVC method may be suitable for calculating strain in human articular cartilage. Variations in strain distribution between different zones of the cartilage were observed, indicating potential for further understanding the mechanical response of articular cartilage.

Micromechanical evaluation of cortical bone using in situ XCT indentation and digital volume correlation

Aikaterina Karali et al.

Summary: The relationship between microstructure and mechanics of cortical bone during plastic deformation is unclear, and this study provides an in-depth evaluation of the interplay between plastic strain building up and changes in the canal network for cortical bone tissue. The research reveals that regions adjacent to the imprint undergo tensile strain, while the volume underneath experiences compressive strain, with canal loss and disruption occurring in regions of higher compressive strains exceeding -20000 mu epsilon.
