Three-dimensional printing of triply periodic minimal surface structured scaffolds for load-bearing bone defects

Raj Agarwal et al.

Summary: In this study, cellular porous biomimetic scaffolds were designed using TPMS-based gyroid and primitive lattice structures with different unit cell sizes. The scaffolds with unit cell size 4 showed higher compressive strength and better bone regeneration compared to unit cell sizes 5 and 6. Moreover, gyroid structured scaffolds exhibited higher compressive strengths than primitive structured scaffolds due to the higher bonding surface area. These findings suggest that the mechanical strength of scaffolds can be tailored by varying the unit cell size and cellular structures, which is important for implant safety.

Enhancement of critical-sized bone defect regeneration by magnesium oxide-reinforced 3D scaffold with improved osteogenic and angiogenic properties

Bo Chen et al.

Summary: The use of three-dimensional (3D) printed biocomposite scaffolds, reinforced with magnesium oxide (MgO), has shown promising results in the treatment of critical-sized bone defects (CSD). The incorporation of magnesium ions (Mg2+) in the scaffold enhances mechanical performance and cytocompatibility, leading to improved bone regeneration and repair.

PLA/Hydroxyapatite scaffolds exhibit in vitro immunological inertness and promote robust osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells without osteogenic stimuli

Marcela P. Bernardo et al.

Summary: Bone defects are a major challenge in reconstructive surgery, and 3D-printed scaffolds using fused deposition modelling (FDM) can provide a tailored solution. This study developed 3D-printed porous scaffolds made of polylactic acid/hydroxyapatite (PLA/HA) composites with high ceramic contents, which exhibited mechanical properties similar to trabecular bone and showed no immune-stimulatory properties. Additionally, these PLA/HA scaffolds were shown to promote osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells.

Summary: In this study, 3D-printed composite bone plates with different Young's moduli were designed and their effects on long-bone fractures were analyzed. A biphasic mechano-regulation algorithm was developed to analyze bone-healing patterns, and the results showed that the composite bone plate with a Young's modulus of 40 GPa exhibited the best healing performance.

Accelerated degradation of HAP/PLLA bone scaffold by PGA blending facilitates bioactivity and osteoconductivity

Cijun Shuai et al.

Summary: The addition of PGA into HAP/PLLA scaffold accelerated the degradation process, leading to increased degradation rate and pore formation, which promoted the deposition and growth of bone-like apatite as well as provided a favorable environment for osteoblast adhesion and proliferation. This led to excellent bone defect repair capacity demonstrated by the formation of abundant new bone tissue and blood vessel tissue, ultimately bridging both ends of the defect region after 8 weeks of implantation.
