High-temperature corrosion of HfSiO4 environmental barrier coatings exposed to water vapor/oxygen atmosphere and molten calcium magnesium aluminosilicate

Shujuan Dong et al.

Summary: The hot corrosion behavior of plasma-sprayed HfSiO4 coatings exposed to CMAS and steam was investigated. The coatings showed good resistance against steam corrosion and avoided significant volume expansion by the buffering effect of pores/microcracks. The coating degradation at high temperatures was associated with TGO volatilization, phase transformation, and thermomechanical incompatibility.

Rare earth monosilicates as oxidation resistant interphase for SiCf/SiC CMC: Investigation of SiCf/Yb2SiO5 model composites

Xirui Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, SiC fiber and Yb2SiO5 composites were processed using the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method. Different types of interfaces were achieved by adjusting the sintering temperature. It was found that the thermal expansion mismatch between Yb2SiO5 and SiC led to high interface stress, and the high temperature and electric field also had an effect on the interface. The study suggests that introducing the Yb2Si2O7-Yb2SiO5 phase can adjust the interfacial parameters and optimize the mechanical properties of the material.

Summary: Four high-entropy perovskite (HEP) RETa3O9 samples with excellent mechanical properties and thermal properties were fabricated using a spark plasma sintering method. The results showed that the HEP ceramics exhibited low thermal conductivity, high hardness, appropriate Young's modulus, and enhanced fracture toughness. The analysis of different parameters influencing the thermal conductivity can expand the applications of HEP materials.

Preparation and properties of CMAS resistant bixbyite structured high-entropy oxides RE2O3 (RE = Sm, Eu, Er, Lu, Y, and Yb): Promising environmental barrier coating materials for Al2O3f/Al2O3 composites

Yanan Sun et al.

Summary: Y2O3 is considered a potential environmental barrier coating material for Al2O3f/Al2O3 ceramic matrix composites due to its high melting point and similar thermal expansion coefficient to Al2O3. However, its high thermal conductivity and unsatisfactory CMAS resistance are major obstacles. High-entropy oxides RE2O3, such as (Eu0.2Er0.2Lu0.2Y0.2Yb0.2)(2)O-3 and (Sm0.2Er0.2Lu0.2Y0.2Yb0.2)(2)O-3, have been developed to address these issues, showing promising mechanical and thermal properties as well as excellent CMAS resistance.

Summary: The microstructure changes and phase transitions of YSZ coatings caused by high-temperature CMAS corrosion at different depth areas were studied. The YSZ coating showed spalling, dense, light dense, and layered structure after corrosion, with a phase transition from t-ZrO2 to m-ZrO2 particles from top to bottom. The CMAS-induced phase transition mainly occurred at the grain boundaries of the coating.
