Micro-structural study of crystals and glassy matrix of black glazed wares from Jian kilns, China (Song Dynasty, AD 960-1279)

Cheng Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, black glazed wares and hare fur's decorated black glazed wares from Jian kilns during the Song Dynasty were analyzed using optical microscope, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results revealed that the firing temperature of hare fur's decorated wares was higher than that of black glazed wares. Different crystal compositions were found in the glazes of the two types of wares. Additionally, variations in bubble distribution and glassy structure were observed among wares from different kiln sites.

Morphology and Structure Characteristics of the Rare Black-Glazed Porcelains Excavated from the Jian Kiln Site of Song Dynasty

Shiqian Tao et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-technique analysis was conducted on three rare types of Jian tea bowls. The tea-dust-glazed ware was found to have a high-temperature iron-based crystalline glaze, while the grey-glazed ware was fired at a lower temperature in the dragon kiln. The pearl-glazed ware was fired through a secondary glazing process. The results provide guidance for the firing process of these rare types of Jian wares and reveal their historical heritage features.

The earliest known artificial synthesized e-Fe2O3 in the Deqing Kiln ceramic ware of Tang

Gen Li et al.

Summary: Metastable e-Fe2O3, the earliest known artificially synthesized e-Fe2O3, was discovered on a ceramic ware of Deqing kiln of the Tang Dynasty, coexisting with a-Fe2O3 in the brown area between adjacent black glaze areas. It is speculated that during the formation of e-Fe2O3, some Fe3+ ions were replaced by Al3+ ions, and a relatively low CaO content may be required for its crystallization. This work may enhance researchers' understanding of e-Fe2O3 crystals and offer insights for the artificial synthesis of large e-Fe2O3 crystals.

Raman study of rusty oil spotted glaze produced in Linfen kilns (Shanxi province, AD 1115-1368)

Minli Wang et al.

Summary: The Linfen kiln complex is known for its oil spotted glazed ware production, and this study used micro-Raman spectroscopy to analyze the nature of the rusty oil spot pattern. Hematite crystals were found in the glaze, with their distribution suggesting how they are carried towards the surface during firing. Additionally, the study revealed variation in band position and FWHM of the spectra due to partial substitution of Fe ions in the hematite crystals.

A Microstructural and Compositional Study of ε-Fe2O3 Crystals in the Hare's Fur Jian Ware

Shiqian Tao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed hare's fur glazed porcelain from Jian kilns using various techniques to understand its microstructure and chemical compositions. The main constituents of the glaze were alumina, silica, calcium, and iron oxide. The glaze surface exhibited three crystal structures, including leaf-like or dendritic-like structures, flower-like clusters, and honeycomb structures.

The microstructure of multicolor hare's fur glaze: the correlation between morphological and compositional characteristics and glaze color

Ming Guan et al.

Summary: Hare's fur glazed Jian wares, a typical representative of Chinese ceramics in the 10th-13th century, were famous for their radial fur-like strips that highlighted the color effects of tea soup in tea culture. The firing technology of these wares played a crucial role in Chinese ceramic history development and modern imitation technology. The research focused on the chromogenic crystals of hare's fur glaze, specifically epsilon-Fe2O3, provides insights into the technological and compositional differences of different types of hare's fur glazes.

Morphological and structural study of crystals in black-to-brown glazes of Yaozhou ware (Song dynasty) using imaging and spectroscopic techniques

Tian Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the black-to-brown ceramic wares from the Yaozhou kiln exhibit unique structures of precipitated crystals, including the rare ε-Fe2O3 phase and a three well-separated layered crystalline distribution. Raman analysis revealed the presence of different elements substitutions in the crystals, and Mg-, Ca- and Fe-rich spinel crystals were observed for the first time in black glazes of the wares.

Firing process and colouring mechanism of black glaze and brown glaze porcelains from the Yuan and Ming dynasties from the Qingliang Temple kiln in Baofeng, Henan, China

Bo Wu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed black glaze and brown glaze porcelain samples from the Qingliang Temple kiln site in Baofeng, Henan, China dating back to the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The brown glaze porcelain exhibited a rare epsilon-Fe2O3 phase, while the black glaze porcelain had a glass phase and alpha-Fe2O3 phase. Different glaze formulations were used for brown and black glazed porcelain, derived from the transformation of black glaze porcelain through different firing atmospheres and cooling rates.
