Synthesis and properties of lead-free BNT-BT-xCZ ceramics as high-temperature dielectricsY

Thomas Schulz et al.

Summary: Bulk ceramic samples of the perovskite series were prepared using the conventional solid-state route, with careful characterization of Bi2O3 raw materials being essential. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the formation of perovskite main phase, and samples with higher CaZrO3 fraction showed a flattening of permittivity-temperature curves along with low dielectric losses.Samples with x = 0.2 exhibited a temperature stable permittivity of epsilon(r) approximate to 600 with small dielectric losses, qualifying them as suitable high temperature capacitor dielectric materials.

Revealing the impact of acceptor dopant type on the electrical conductivity of sodium bismuth titanate

Leonie Koch et al.

Summary: Solid solutions of sodium bismuth titanate (NBT) are the most performant lead-free dielectric ceramics for energy storage. The defect chemistry of NBT is complex, and acceptor doping can result in unexpected and extraordinarily high oxygen ionic conductivity. This study elucidates the interaction between acceptors and oxygen vacancies and rationalizes the observed differences in conductivity through experiments and calculations.

Suppression of high-temperature dielectric loss by designed thermal annealing treatment in (Bi1/2Nau1/2)TiO3 ceramics

Ju-Hyeon Lee et al.

Summary: Dielectrics for automobile applications require high temperature reliability. Bi(1/2)Nau(1/2)TiO(3)-based materials are excellent candidates with large temperature-insensitive dielectric responses and a maximum dielectric permittivity temperature of up to 300 degrees C. However, their high dielectric loss increases exponentially above 200 degrees C due to ionic conduction. This study demonstrates that introducing a sodium deficiency and thermal annealing can effectively suppress the impact of ionic conduction on dielectric loss, elevating the temperature insensitivity of the dielectric loss up to approximately 300 degrees C.

Summary: Lead-free ceramics based on NBT have shown excellent ferroelectric properties, positioning them as top contenders to replace lead-based piezoelectrics. However, the defect chemistry of NBT is complex and high oxygen ionic conductivity can negatively impact ferroelectric properties. The non-linear dependence of conductivity on acceptor concentration allows for a wide range of tuning possibilities in NBT-based materials.
