Numerical Prediction of the Influence of Rub-Induced Thermal Stress on the Abradability of CuAl-Polyester Sealing Coating

Wei Sun et al.

Summary: In this paper, the relationship between rub-induced thermal stress and the abradability of CuAl seal coating was studied using a thermal-mechanical coupling finite element method. The results showed that the contact friction coefficient and incursion conditions had a significant influence on the rub-induced thermal stress. The abradability of the coating increased with the decrease in coating feed speed, and the release of thermal stress and reduction of hardness were identified as the main reasons for maintaining good abradability.

High temperature abradable sealing coating for SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites

Jingqi Huang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the compatibility of intermediate layers for the plasma-sprayed porous YSZ abradable sealing coating (ASC) on SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMC). Through isothermal exposure and thermal shock tests at 1200 degrees C, the YSZ topcoat experienced decomposition, formation of mud-cracks and thermally grown oxide, along with the reaction layer of Yb2Si2O7. The coated samples exhibited a bond strength of 5.47 +/- 0.85 MPa and showed excellent high temperature hardness stability with a minimal increase in Superficial Rockwell Hardness (HR15Y) after 1200 degrees C isothermal exposure. The abradability of the ASC was influenced by the hardness and thermal conductivity of the encountered balls.

Failure mechanisms of (Gd0.9Yb0.1)2Zr2O7/Yb2SiO5/Si thermal/environmental barrier coatings during thermal exposure at 1300 °C/1400 °C

Wenbo Chen et al.

Summary: A novel tri-layer thermal and environmental barrier coatings were proposed for SiC-based ceramic matrix composites. The study revealed the oxidation behavior and failure mechanisms of the coatings at high temperatures, suggesting that defects like mud-cracks, cavities, and TGO channel cracks could cause delaminating failure at the interface.

Self-lubricating epoxy-based composite abradable seal coating eliminating adhesive transfer via hierarchical design

Yun-Qi Tong et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel epoxy-based composite abradable seal coating that eliminates adhesive transfer by changing the scraping pair from metal-to-metal to metal-to-polymer. The coating exhibits self-lubricating properties and thermal conductivity, preventing adhesive transfer during metal blade scraping.

Mesoscale Simulation and Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of Ceramic Seal Coatings

Xuying Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructure feature extraction and performance simulations of a Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) abradable coating used in high-pressure turbines of aero-engines with a service temperature over 1000 degrees C. The effects of porosity and pore diameter on the properties of the coating were determined, and an evaluation function using the normalized weighting strategy was proposed to characterize the comprehensive properties of the coating. The optimal abradability, bonding strength, and thermal shock resistance of the coating were obtained under a combination of 25% porosity and 1 μm pore diameter.

Yumeng Ni et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of the CuAl-NiC abradable seal coating system in chloride solution was systematically investigated, with a focus on the effects of porosity, multiphase, and multilayer structure on corrosion failure. Interphase selective corrosion and interlayer galvanic corrosion were identified as crucial factors leading to the corrosion failure of the system.

Fabrication and characterization of Yb2Si2O7-based composites as novel abradable sealing coatings

Dandan Qin et al.

Summary: The Yb2Si2O7 combined with hBN system exhibits lower hardness, lower friction coefficient, higher wear rate, and smaller IDR value than the pure Yb2Si2O7 coating, making it suitable for use in ASCs. However, excessive hBN can cause severe wear of the coatings. This study provides guidelines for the development of ASCs suitable for CMCs.

A Study on YSZ Abradable Seal Coatings Prepared by Atmospheric Plasma Spray and Mixed Solution Precursor Plasma Spray

Xiaoming Sun et al.

Summary: Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics are promising materials for abradable seal coatings. Two types of coatings, C-YSZ and M-YSZ, were prepared using different methods and characterized for their microstructure, mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and hot corrosion resistance. While M-YSZ showed better oxidation resistance, both coatings failed to exhibit ideal hot corrosion resistance.
