Evaluation of elastic constants and high temperature tensile behaviour with damage assessment of the SiC seal-coated 2.5D Cf/SiC composites having multilayered interphase and Si-B-C added matrix

Ramya Krishna et al.

Summary: The elastic constants and tensile behavior of 2.5D Cf/SiC composites processed by chemical vapor infiltration, which possess a multilayered (PyC/SiC)n=4 interphase, Si-B-C containing matrix, and SiC seal-coating, have been evaluated through microstructural examination and damage assessment. The tensile strength at 27 degrees C is 187 +/- 2 MPa, and it increases by 18% and 22% at 1000 degrees C and 1250 degrees C, respectively, due to reduced thermal stress and increased strength of load-sharing C-fibers. The damage during tension tests has been quantified by relating it to the decrease of stress-strain slope with strain. The elastic constants measured along the fiber axes are 6-8 times higher than those obtained transversely, indicating significant anisotropy.

Size effect of carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide composites (C/C-SiC): Part 2-tensile testing with alignment device

Stefan Flauder et al.

Summary: Appropriate assessment of mechanical properties is crucial for designing ceramic matrix composites. Understanding the size effect of strength is vital for transferring knowledge from lab-scale samples to actual components. In this study, a hybrid edge/face-loading test device was developed to investigate the size effect of carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbon (C/C-SiC) under tensile load. Mechanical analysis of over 190 samples with different cross-sections showed no significant difference in tensile strength. These findings were discussed in relation to the weakest link and energetic size effect approaches.

Damage analysis of a SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composite under stepwise fatigue loading with acoustic emission

Fei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the tension-tension fatigue behavior of continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) and studies the damage accumulation and evolution process using the acoustic emission (AE) method. The results show that the material exhibits obvious hysteresis behavior and is affected by interfacial slip and wear mechanisms. Most of the fibers have high strength and excellent toughening property.

A damage constitutive model for the nonlinear mechanical behavior of C/SiC composites during mechanical cyclical loading/unloading

Z. B. Niu et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear mechanical behavior and damage mechanisms of C/SiC composites during cyclic loading/unloading tensile tests were investigated. Damage evolution model and single fiber unit model were proposed based on the composite microstructure and damage mechanisms, which can explain the stiffness degradation and inelastic deformation accumulation. These models can accurately predict the deformation and damage law of the composite using basic macroscopic parameters.

Fatigue behavior and damage analysis of PIP C/SiC composite

Renato S. M. Almeida et al.

Summary: In this study, the fatigue behavior of a C/SiC composite produced by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis was investigated. The results showed that most of the damage occurred in the first cycle, but the samples survived 1,000,000 cycles and exhibited an increase in tensile strength.

Characterization and modeling of tensile properties of continuous fiber reinforced C/C-SiC composite at high temperatures

Yuan Shi et al.

Summary: The effects of temperature on the mechanical properties of Liquid Silicon Infiltration based continuous carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide were studied. Tensile properties were determined at high temperatures, showing almost no permanent strain compared to room temperature tests. Different fracture mechanisms were confirmed by analyzing the fracture surface, and a modeling approach for predicting material behavior at high temperature was developed with good agreement between test and modeling results.

Tailored macro-pores during the formation of C/C-SiC via liquid phase pyrolysis

Stefan Flauder et al.

Summary: Synthesizing C/C-SiC via liquid silicon infiltration with thermoplastic carbon precursors can result in macro-pores in the C/C state, which can be controlled and utilized as a new level in microstructure for ceramic matrix composites. These macro-pores are primarily induced by the non-linear elastic recovery of the fiber preform, rather than gas formation and release during pyrolysis. The pore shapes can be tailored by process control, varying from isolated spherical pores to an interconnected tube-like macro-pore network.
