Synthesis, structure and magnetism of RTa7O19 (R = Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho) with perfect triangular lattice

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: We present the synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of a previously unexplored family of rare-earth based RTa7O19 compounds. Structural analysis reveals that magnetic R ions form ideal two-dimensional triangular lattice layers in the ab-plane, separated by nonmagnetic polyhedra layers along the c-axis. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements demonstrate the absence of long-range magnetic order and field-induced magnetic transitions in all studied compounds. The details of the magnetism strongly depend on the type of R ions. The presence of geometrical frustration is discussed. Thus, RTa7O19 offers a new platform for exploring frustrated magnetism.

Phase equilibria in the CaO-TaO2.5-YO1.5 system and its implication for YTaO4 reactivity with CMAS

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: Phase equilibria in the CaO-TaO2.5-YO1.5 system were experimentally investigated, with the construction of an isothermal section at 1400 degrees C. The study identified ten three-phase equilibrium fields and analyzed the solid solution regions of binary compounds. The phase diagram provided insights into the corrosion behavior of YTaO4, particularly in the presence of CaO.

Phase equilibria and non-transformable tetragonal zirconia in ZrO2-RETaO4 systems and their stabilization mechanism: Experiments and calculations

Dan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effects of rare-earth dopants on the phase equilibria and phase stability of tetragonal zirconia in ZrO2-RETaO4 systems. The composition range of non-transformable t-ZrO2 in ZrO2-YbTaO4, ZrO2-DyTaO4, and ZrO2-GdTaO4 is measured to be about 30-41, 22-29, and 16-19 mol% RE0.5Ta0.5O2, respectively. However, non-transformable t-ZrO2 cannot be found in ZrO2NdTaO4 and ZrO2-LaTaO4. These findings are valuable for the development of appropriate thermal barrier coatings.

Phase Stability and Mechanical Properties of the Monoclinic, Monoclinic-Prime and Tetragonal REMO4 (M = Ta, Nb) from First-Principles Calculations

Wenhui Xiao et al.

Summary: This article investigates the phase stability and mechanical properties of YTaO4 and related modifications. The study finds that M'-RETaO4 is the stable phase at low temperatures, while RENbO4 has a monoclinic structure. The phase transformation temperature of M'->T or M->T decreases with increasing ionic radius of RE3+. Furthermore, adding Nb to the M'-RETaO4 phase induces the phase transformation temperature of M'->M.

Phase equilibria in the ZrO2-Ta2O5-Nb2O5 system: Experimental studies and thermodynamic modeling

Peide Luo et al.

Summary: The phase relations in the ZrO2-Ta2O5-Nb2O5 system were experimentally investigated and thermodynamically modeled. It was found that Ta2O5 and Nb2O5 phases substantially extend into the ternary system, forming a continuous solid solution. Despite initial difficulties in reproducing experimental results, the introduction of ternary mixing parameters allowed for improved thermodynamic descriptions and successful validation of the data.

Fluctuating bonding leads to glass-like thermal conductivity in perovskite rare-earth tantalates

Junwei Che et al.

Summary: This study reveals the origin of glass-like low K in RETa3O9 through atomistic simulation, which is mainly due to the rattling effect of RE3+ cations and the large difference in interatomic bonding between O-RE and O-Ta. It is also found that in RETa3O9, the majority of heat is transported by diffusive modes rather than propagating modes.

Optical properties of gadolinia-doped cubic yttria stabilized zirconia single crystals

Siyao Li et al.

Summary: Cubic zirconia single crystals stabilized with yttria and doped with Gd2O3 were prepared and characterized using various spectroscopic techniques. The absorption and emission spectra showed distinct peaks, with peak intensities changing with varying Gd3+ concentrations. The quenching effect observed in the emission spectra is attributed to dipole-dipole interactions, and supported by the broadening of Gd3+ EPR spectra with increasing concentration.

Influence of Gd2O3 substitution on thermal and mechanical properties of ZrO2-Ta2O5-Y2O3

Jinshuang Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of partial Y2O3 substitution by Gd2O3 on the thermal and mechanical properties of ZrO2-Ta2O5-Y2O3 ceramics. Results showed that Gd2O3 substitution decreased phase stability and thermal conductivity, but increased thermal expansion coefficients of the materials.

Thermodynamic modeling of ZrO2-Y2O3-SiO2 and ZrO2-Gd2O3-SiO2 systems

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on thermodynamic modeling in ZrO2-Y2O3-SiO2 and ZrO2-Gd2O3-SiO2 systems using the CALPHAD method to provide a reliable basis for thermodynamic extrapolations and calculations. Major inconsistencies were found between experimental data and calculations, mainly due to overestimation or underestimation of phase stabilities in binary sub-systems. By reassessing Y2O3-SiO2 and ZrO2-Gd2O3 systems based on new experiments, the improved thermodynamic descriptions successfully reproduced experimental data for ternary systems.

Summary: The study shows that YbTa3O9 with spontaneously formed nanostructures has a thermal conductivity lower than commercial-level TBC materials due to periodic strain between boundaries. Additionally, YbTa3O9 exhibits thermal expansion characteristics similar to 7YSZ, suggesting its potential as a TBC material.
