Reversible Self-discharge of LFP/Graphite and NMC811/Graphite Cells Originating from Redox Shuttle Generation

Sebastian Buechele et al.

Summary: This study investigates the open circuit storage losses of LFP/graphite and NMC811/graphite pouch cells with common alkyl carbonate electrolytes to understand and prevent the unwanted parasitic reactions that lead to self-discharge and inefficiency in lithium-ion cells. The experiment shows that cells formed at elevated temperatures exhibit high reversible storage losses due to the generation of a redox shuttle in the electrolyte during formation. Applying voltage hold after formation can greatly reduce the shuttle-induced self-discharge and improve the cell's performance. Additionally, adding 2% vinylene carbonate can effectively prevent the generation of redox shuttle and minimize reversible self-discharge.

Relaxation Effects in Self-Discharge Measurements of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Thomas Roth et al.

Summary: To assess the quality of newly manufactured lithium-ion cells, self-discharge measurements are carried out after production in a process known as aging. The aging process is time-consuming and expensive due to relaxation effects that disrupt the self-discharge measurements. This study investigated different methods for electrical self-discharge measurement and found that long-term disturbances caused by anode overhang significantly affected all measurements for several weeks.

Long-Term Self-Discharge Measurements and Modelling for Various Cell Types and Cell Potentials

Mohamed Azzam et al.

Summary: In this study, the self-discharge behavior of lithium-ion cells was investigated over a period of 150 days at 30 degrees C. A transient part leading to a steady-state was observed in all cell types, and both the transient processes and steady-state currents showed high reproducibility. Check-up interruptions had little effect on the reached steady-state and only prolonged the settling time. A model was developed to simulate the transient process and steady-state of float currents with high accuracy.

Growth of the solid-electrolyte interphase: Electron diffusion versus solvent diffusion

Lukas Koebbing et al.

Summary: This study discusses the dependence of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) growth on characteristic time and state-of-charge, mediated by electron diffusion and solvent diffusion. Experimental results and continuum models show that electron diffusion can explain the observed state-of-charge and time dependence, while solvent diffusion can only reproduce either of them. The role of anode voltage and state-of-charge on SEI growth is emphasized. Further experiments are needed to explore contributions to capacity fade independent of state-of-charge.

A Comparison of Voltage Hold and Voltage Decay Methods for Side Reactions Characterization

Luiza Streck et al.

Summary: This study qualitatively compares the voltage hold and voltage decay methods for detecting side reactions using a high precision coulometry tester. The results show that both methods deliver comparable results for determining the differential capacity, with a discrepancy of 15% observed only at 90% state of charge (SoC) due to the peak shape of the analysis curve. It is advantageous to analyze the shape of the respective cells when performing such measurements. Furthermore, the evaluation of end of charge point and end of discharge point slippage reveals that couple side reactions dominate leakage currents at higher SoCs and lead to reversible losses, while irreversible losses remain almost constant for SoCs higher than 50%.

Characterization of the Solid-Electrolyte Interphase Growth During Cell Formation Based on Differential Voltage Analysis

Felix Schomburg et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel method to evaluate the growth of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) during the formation of lithium-ion batteries with low experimental effort. By testing coin cells under pseudo-open-circuit conditions and evaluating the differential voltage, the capacity loss caused by SEI formation in the first cycle is estimated. Various methods are compared to identify the SEI growth curve, which is then used to compare different electrolytes. The results indicate that the SEI growth can be explained by a combination of interstitial diffusion and electron tunneling, with the latter dominating at the beginning of formation, and the transition between these mechanisms is influenced by the electrolyte.

Influence of the anode overhang on the open-circuit voltage and the ageing of lithium-ion batteries-A model based study

Felix Hildenbrand et al.

Summary: The anode overhang has a significant influence on the ageing trajectory of lithium-ion batteries. It affects the cell balancing by transferring active lithium between the anode overhang and the active anode. This study demonstrates that the anode overhang also influences the open-circuit voltage, leading to a persistent rise.

A Method to Determine Fast Charging Procedures by Operando Overvoltage Analysis

Patrick Muenster et al.

Summary: A method for determining the threshold voltage conditions for Li plating in lithium-ion battery cells is proposed, which transfers open-circuit values measured in electrochemical experiments to a different cell setup and allows assessment of the boundary conditions for Li plating. The study demonstrates that these boundary conditions perfectly correspond to the exact onset of Li plating in multi-layer pouch cells. By knowing the threshold voltage conditions for Li plating, plating-free fast-charging procedures can be implemented, leading to a significant increase in charging rate. The occurrence of Li plating can be deliberately controlled by cycling above or below the threshold voltage.

Strategies towards enabling lithium metal in batteries: interphases and electrodes

Summary: Despite the approaching performance limits of lithium-ion intercalation batteries, research is intensifying on next-generation battery technologies, with a focus on the use of lithium metal anode. However, the poor morphological stability and Coulombic efficiency of the lithium metal anode in liquid electrolytes present challenges for reversible cycling. Experimental and theoretical insights are being used to explore pathways for stable cycling of two-dimensional lithium metal and improvements in understanding lithium metal nucleation and deposition on the nanoscale. Recent advances in electrolytes and SEI design show potential for stable cycling and mitigation of morphological instabilities.

Float Current Analysis for Fast Calendar Aging Assessment of 18650 Li(NiCoAl)O2/Graphite Cells

Michael Theiler et al.

Summary: In this study, float currents of Samsung 18650 cells were measured and found to follow the Arrhenius law with an activation energy of approximately 60 kJ/mol. The capacity loss showed a high correlation with the results of float current analysis, and the float current analysis enabled a more precise determination of the aging rate down to at least 10 degrees Celsius. Additionally, a decreasing trend in float currents at 30 degrees Celsius for increasing temperature steps was observed, suggesting a hysteresis effect that requires further investigation in future publications.
