In situ and real-time vibrational spectroscopic characterizations of the photodegradation of nitrite in the presence of methanediol

Chiao-Mi Cheng et al.

Summary: The photolytic products of nitrite and their oxidation effects on organic matter were studied in aqueous aerosols. In situ and real-time infrared and Raman spectroscopy revealed that nitrite and methanediol gradually decreased under 365 nm UVA irradiation, with the concomitant formation of nitrous oxide and formate, and eventually carbonate.

Influence of the thickness of silica layer on the radiative relaxation of AuNR@SiO2 core-shell nanostructures upon photoexcitation

Jhih-Jie Lai et al.

Summary: Silica-coated gold nanorods with different silica thicknesses were excited with a pulsed laser, leading to infrared emissions. Thicker silica coatings resulted in slower emission decay, indicating thermalization properties of SiO2 on a microsecond timescale. Vibrational energy stored in solid SiO2 and embedded water could potentially serve as an energy donor for vibrationally-assisted chemical reactions.

Summary: Mid-IR spectroscopy is used to investigate protein reactions. In this study, quantum-cascade-laser-based dual-comb spectroscopy is used to probe protein conformational changes and protonation events by a single-shot experiment. The feasibility of QCL-based infrared spectroscopy in monitoring irreversible reactions is demonstrated.

Formation reaction mechanism and infrared spectra of anti-trans-methacrolein oxide and its associated precursor and adduct radicals

Jia-Rong Cai et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation of methacrolein oxide (MACRO) was characterized using infrared spectroscopy. The authors identified the precursor and adduct radicals associated with MACRO, providing insights into its source reaction. This research contributes to a better understanding of the formation mechanisms of carbonyl oxides in the atmosphere.

Comparing the Reactivities of Methanol and Methanediol in the Photolysis of Aqueous Nitrite Solution

Yuan-Jyun Jhao et al.

Summary: This study used a step-scan Fourier transform interferometer to monitor the infrared spectra changes of NaNO2 aqueous solution in the presence of methanediol and methanol. The experiment found that methanol had a slower hydrolysis rate of dinitrogen trioxide (N2O3) compared to methanediol. This is because the two hydroxyl groups in methanediol can serve as a water reservoir, further facilitating the hydrolytic solvation reaction of N2O3.

Rapid preparation of gaseous methanediol (CH2(OH)2)

Yi-Fang Chen et al.

Summary: The simplest geminal diol CH2(OH)(2) is a crucial precursor for atmospheric formic acid formation. CH2(OH)(2) vapor can be generated by evaporating an aqueous formaldehyde solution prepared by dissolving paraformaldehyde under reflux. The rovibrational feature of CH2(OH)(2) at 980-1100 cm(-1) is consistent with simulations and is not affected by interfering H2O and CH2O.

Radiative Relaxation of Gold Nanorods Coated with Mesoporous Silica with Different Porosities upon Nanosecond Photoexcitation Monitored by Time-Resolved Infrared Emission Spectroscopy

Jun-Yi Lu et al.

Summary: This research investigated the impact of porosity, capping materials, and entrapping molecules on the thermalization process after photoexcitation using gold nanorods coated with surfactant-templated mesoporous silica layers. It was found that higher porosity in the mesoporous silica layer allowed for more effective depopulation of vibrationally excited states via the thermal conduction of adsorbed H2O, resulting in accelerated emission kinetics.

Time-resolved Infrared Characterization on the Photolysis of Roussin's Red Phenyl Ester in Different Solvents

Yi-Ju Yu et al.

Summary: The research shows that the photolysis of Roussin's red esters under different solvent conditions produces different photolytic products. In cyclohexane, the solvent acts weakly, while in a mixed solvent of THF and 1,4-dioxane (DX), these solvents can coordinate with the photolytic intermediates to form different transient species.

Gaseous infrared spectra of the simplest geminal diol CH2(OH)2 and the isotopic analogues in the hydration of formaldehyde

Hung-Yang Jian et al.

Summary: The study successfully probed the infrared spectrum of the simplest geminal diol, methanediol, in the gaseous hydration of formaldehyde. The experimental results agreed with the predicted vibrational wavenumbers and rotational parameters, confirming the accuracy of the calculations. The successful characterization of gaseous methanediol opens up possibilities for investigating chemical reactions of geminal diols in various fields.
