Suicide risk in first year after dementia diagnosis in older adults

Timothy Schmutte et al.

Summary: The study found that in the first year after a diagnosis of ADRD, the suicide rate is higher among ADRD patients compared to the general geriatric population, especially in adults aged 65 to 74, with a significantly high risk. Factors such as rural residence, recent mental health issues, substance abuse, and chronic pain conditions were associated with an increased risk of suicide.

Associated factors of suicidal ideation among older persons with dementia living at home in eight European countries

Cecilia Holmstrand et al.

Summary: The occurrence of suicidal ideation in the participating countries varied between 6% and 24%. Factors significantly associated with suicidal ideation included nationality, depressive symptoms, delusions, hallucinations, anxiety, apathy, irritability, and medication usage. Over time, 54% of persons with dementia experienced a decrease in suicidal ideation from severe to mild or absence.

Predicting loss of independence and mortality in frontotemporal lobar degeneration syndromes

Alexander G. Murley et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate whether behavioral impairment can predict loss of functional independence in syndromes associated with frontotemporal lobar degeneration, and whether motor clinical features can predict mortality. The results showed that behavioral disturbance was associated with reduced functionally independent survival, while motor impairments were associated with reduced absolute survival, supporting individualized prognostication and planning of disease-modifying trials in patients with clinical syndromes associated with frontotemporal lobar degeneration using a transdiagnostic approach.

Risk of Suicide Attempt in Patients With Recent Diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment or Dementia

Mia Maria Gunak et al.

Summary: Little is known about the association between mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and suicide, but recent study found that older adults with recent MCI or dementia diagnoses were at increased risk of attempting suicide. Involvement of supportive services at the time of or soon after diagnoses of MCI or dementia may help mitigate risk of suicide attempts.
