Using Medicare Enrollment Data to Identify Beneficiaries in Assisted Living

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop an approach for identifying Medicare beneficiaries residing in US assisted living communities. The researchers used multiple data sources, including a national directory of licensed assisted living communities, US addresses and their associated ZIP+4 codes, and Medicare enrollment and beneficiary files. The study identified characteristics of Medicare beneficiaries living in assisted living communities and validated the approach through comparisons with other beneficiary cohorts.

The Imperative to Reimagine Assisted Living

Summary: Assisted living (AL) is a care model that has evolved to meet the supportive care needs of older adults. However, the involvement of real estate, hospitality, and healthcare sectors has raised concerns about the variability, quality, and standards of AL. Despite the intention to provide person-centered care and quality of life, tensions related to AL models, regulation, financing, resident acuity, and the workforce have caused a deviation from the original constructs. This article presents the background of these tensions and potential solutions for a better future of AL.

As-Needed Prescribing and Administration of Psychotropic Medications in Assisted Living: A 7-State Study

Summary: This study examined the prescribing and administration of as-needed psychotropic medications in assisted living (AL) residents. The results showed that the prescribing of as-needed psychotropics in AL is relatively low, but more common among residents with dementia. The findings suggest the need to expand psychotropic medication policies to address mental health care, anxiolytic/hypnotic use for residents living with dementia, PRN prescribing in chart review, and the use of detailed indications for PRN use.

Rates of health services use among residents of retirement homes in Ontario: a population-based cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the differences in health service utilization between residents of retirement homes and other populations of older adults as well as residents of long-term care homes. The findings showed that compared to residents of long-term care homes, residents of retirement homes had higher rates of emergency department visits, hospital admissions, alternate level of care days, and specialist physician visits, but lower rates of primary care visits.

Putting the Nursing and Home in Nursing Homes

Summary: Nursing homes in the United States often lack adequate nursing staff and a homelike environment, which was further exacerbated during the pandemic. The main reasons for these issues are the low reimbursement from state Medicaid payment systems and the lack of government accountability for how nursing homes spend their funding. To address these problems, reforms are needed in the payment system and oversight of nursing home expenditures.

Psychotropic medication prescribing in assisted living and nursing home residents with dementia after the National Partnership

Summary: This study aimed to compare the impact of the National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes (the Partnership) on the use of antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications in nursing homes (NH) and assisted living (AL) residents. The study found that the Partnership did not reduce the use of antipsychotic medications in AL residents and there was an increase in the use of anticonvulsants/mood stabilizers after the launch of the Partnership. Monitoring of all psychotropic medications in both AL and NH settings may be warranted.

Defining the Assisted Living Sector in Canada: An Environmental Scan

Summary: This study identified terms used to describe the assisted living sector, legislation governing operation, cost estimates, and sector growth in all Canadian provinces and territories. The terms varied across Canada, with Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta having some of the highest median fees per month. The assisted living sector in Ontario doubled in size and corporate-owned facilities increased threefold.

The Relationship Between States' Staffing Regulations And Hospitalizations Of Assisted Living Residents
