Association of neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and cognitive impairment

Differential Associations Between the Area Deprivation Index and Measures of Physical Health for Older Black Adults

Summary: This study explores the association between place-based characteristics, such as neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation, and physical health in older Black adults. The findings suggest that individuals living in more disadvantaged neighborhoods, as determined by national and state area deprivation indices, are more likely to report better self-rated health and require less help with daily activities. There is also an interaction effect between age and area deprivation, with better self-rated health being associated with more disadvantaged neighborhoods for individuals aged 66 years and below.

Disparities in 30-day readmission rates among Medicare enrollees with dementia

Summary: This study examined the readmission rates within 30 days for Black and non-Hispanic White individuals with dementia diagnoses and found that Black Medicare beneficiaries had a 37% higher readmission odds compared to White beneficiaries. This disparity persisted even after adjusting for geographic, social, hospital, and other factors. Living in less disadvantaged neighborhoods was associated with reduced readmissions for White beneficiaries, but not for Black beneficiaries.

Receipt of Posthospitalization Care Training Among Medicare Beneficiaries' Family Caregivers

Summary: This study analyzed data from 2017 Medicare beneficiary and their family and unpaid caregivers surveys to describe characteristics and assess the prevalence of adequate transitional care training among family caregivers for older adults. Among caregivers who assisted with posthospitalization care transitions, Black caregivers and those experiencing financial difficulty were less likely to receive adequate training. Strategies such as standardized caregiver assessments may be needed to ensure equitable support of family caregivers during the discharge process.

Impact of dementia: Health disparities, population trends, care interventions, and economic costs

Summary: Dementia incidence is decreasing, but the advances in population health are uneven. Studies have identified clear disparities in the educational, geographic, and race/ethnic distribution of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Gaps in evidence for interventions may amplify disparities in health and healthcare, while the economic costs for persons living with dementia and their care partners' time are high and may persist into future generations.

Area Deprivation Index and Cardiac Readmissions: Evaluating Risk-Prediction in an Electronic Health Record

Summary: This study investigated the association and predictive ability of neighborhood-level determinants, readmission risk, and mortality for heart failure, myocardial ischemia, and atrial fibrillation. The findings suggest that patients residing in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities are at higher risk of readmission and mortality following cardiac hospitalization. Measuring neighborhood deprivation can aid in identifying individuals at risk for adverse outcomes post-hospitalization.
