Solvent Dynamics Are Critical to Understanding Carbon Dioxide Dissolution and Hydration in Water

John Mark P. Martirez et al.

Summary: Simulations of carbon dioxide in water can help understand its impact on aquatic environments and advance carbon capture and utilization technologies. Only by using quantum mechanical simulations and rare-event sampling, combined with energy corrections, can the theoretical results closely match experimental data. These multilevel simulations can serve as benchmarks for simpler models and provide insights into their potential errors.

Computational Insights into Mg2+ Dehydration in the Presence of Carbonate

Julie Aufort et al.

Summary: In this study, water exchange around a free magnesium ion and magnesium paired with carbonate in aqueous solution was investigated using free energy methods. The results were validated by comparing with experimental data. It was found that the formation of a contact magnesium carbonate ion pair significantly reduces the energy barrier for water exchange, which has important implications for understanding the nucleation of magnesium-bearing carbonate minerals.

Kinetic pathways of water exchange in the first hydration shell of magnesium: Influence of water model and ionic force field

Sebastian Falkner et al.

Summary: This study investigates the water exchange mechanism between the hydration shells of Mg2+ through molecular dynamics simulations and transition path sampling. It reveals that the choice of water model and Mg2+ model influences the exchange kinetics, with different mechanisms observed depending on the force field used. The results provide insights into the impact of force field choice on exchange dynamics in biomolecular simulations.
