Polymer Semiconductors: Synthesis, Processing, and Applications

Li Ding et al.

Summary: Polymer semiconductors, composed of carbon-based pi conjugated backbone, have been studied for decades as active layers of various organic electronic devices. They combine the advantages of metal and semiconductor electrical conductivity with the mechanical behavior of plastics, making them a promising modulable electronic material. However, despite significant efforts, there is still no clear understanding of the relationship between intrinsic molecular structures, microstructures, and device performances. This review summarizes the development of polymer semiconductors, emphasizing the role of multilevel microstructures in determining device performance, and discusses the challenges and future opportunities in this field.

Synthesis of Polydiynesviaan Unexpected Dimerization/Polymerization Sequence of C3 Propargylic Electrophiles

Han-Li Sun et al.

Summary: Here, we report the unexpected discovery of a Cu-catalyzed condensation polymerization reaction that converts simple C3 building blocks into polydiynes with C6 repeating units. This reaction utilized a simple system composed of a copper acetylide initiator and an electron-rich phosphine ligand to produce alkyne polymers with high yields, regioselectivity, and functional group compatibility. Hydrogenation of the resulting product yielded a new polyolefin-type backbone, while base-mediated isomerization led to a novel dienyne-based electron-deficient conjugated polymer. Mechanistic studies revealed an alpha-alpha selective Cu-catalyzed dimerization pathway of the C3 unit, followed by organocopper-mediated chain-growth propagation.
