Charge Separation by Creating Band Bending in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Improved Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Chenxi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates for the first time the band bending phenomenon in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), achieved by integrating MOFs with metal oxides to form MOF composites. The resulting MOF composites show 56 to 42 times higher activities in photocatalytic H-2 production compared to pristine MOFs.

Electronic defects in metal oxide photocatalysts

Ernest Pastor et al.

Summary: Defects play a crucial role in solids and catalytic reactions. Understanding the charged defects and polarons in metal oxides is essential for optimizing materials for solar energy conversion, especially in metal oxide (photo)electrocatalysts. In photocatalysis, defects can stabilize charge separation and mediate rate-limiting catalytic steps.

Influence of Excess Charge on Water Adsorption on the BiVO4(010) Surface

Wennie Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a combined computational and experimental investigation on the adsorption of water on the Mo-doped BiVO4(010) surface. It reveals the influence of excess electrons on the dissociation of water and the hydroxyl-induced alterations of the surface electronic structure. The dissociation of water stabilizes the formation of a small electron polaron on the VO4 tetrahedral site and enhances the concentration of localized electronic charge at the surface.

The role of crystal facets and disorder on photo-electrosynthesis

Ernest Pastor et al.

Summary: This review discusses the impact of crystal facets and disorder on photoelectrochemical reactivity, highlighting how crystal orientation influences the energetics and transport of reactive charges, ultimately determining PEC activity. The evaluation of facet stability on the tendency for solid reconstruction during catalytic processes is also emphasized, as well as the experimental and computational challenges that need to be overcome to characterize the role of exposed facets and disorder in catalytic performance.

Mo-doping induced crystal orientation reconstruction and oxygen vacancy on BiVO4 homojunction for enhanced solar-driven water splitting

Ming Fang et al.

Summary: Fabrication junction and doping are two major methods to improve the charge separation and transfer efficiency of BiVO4 photoanode. The study reports a Mo doped BiVO4 homojunction with abundant oxygen vacancies, which shows an obvious enhancement in photocurrent compared to the pristine BVO. Using graphene as the hole extraction layer and CoPi as the cocatalysts, the CoPi/Gr/Mo:BVO photoanode exhibits high OER activity under illumination.

Understanding the Role of Vanadium Vacancies in BiVO4 for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Thanh Tran-Phu et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of vanadium vacancies on the efficiency of BiVO4 photoanodes for water photooxidation, revealing that vanadium deficiency leads to increased recombination rate of photogenerated carriers and lower water oxidation efficiency. Elimination of vanadium vacancies results in prolonged carrier lifetimes, increased catalytically active sites, and a twofold increase in photocurrent during water oxidation.

Controlling Charge Carrier Trapping and Recombination in BiVO4 with the Oxygen Vacancy Oxidation State

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: This study uses nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the impact of oxygen vacancies (OV) on charge carrier lifetimes in BiVO4 photoanodes. The simulations reveal that neutral OV cause local structural distortions and deep polaron-like hole traps, accelerating nonradiative recombination. Ionized OV states restore bandgap and charge carrier lifetimes.
