Photoresponsive Supramolecular Polymers: From Light-Controlled Small Molecules to Smart Materials

Fan Xu et al.

Summary: Photoresponsive supramolecular polymers are highly organized assemblies with photosensitive molecules as monomers, showing reversible changes in geometry, dipole moment, and chirality upon light stimuli. They have broad applications in smart materials, including light-driven soft actuators, fluorescent anticounterfeiting, and light-triggered electronic devices. This review focuses on the light-activated molecules used in photoresponsive supramolecular polymers and the different changes induced by light. It also highlights the disassembly, reassembly, actuation, emission, and chirality transfer of these polymers. Future opportunities and challenges, such as using visible/near IR light and enabling biomedical applications, are also discussed.

Controlling the Supramolecular Polymerization of Squaraine Dyes by a Molecular Chaperone Analogue

Lara Kleine-Kleffmann et al.

Summary: Molecular chaperones are proteins that help in the folding and assembly of other structures. In this study, a chaperone-like two-component system was used to control supramolecular polymerization. A new kinetic trapping method was developed to retard self-assembly, which could be regulated with a cofactor. The system was characterized using various techniques and demonstrated the possibility for effective control over supramolecular polymerization processes.

Pathway Complexity in Supramolecular Copolymerization and Blocky Star Copolymers by a Hetero-Seeding Effect

Payel Khanra et al.

Summary: This study explores the complex kinetic and thermodynamic pathways involved in the supramolecular copolymerization of two chiral dipolar NMI building blocks. O-NMI forms distinct nanotapes and helical fibers, while S-NMI only forms stable spherical assemblies. The study also shows that O-NMI and S-NMI can evolve into star-shaped copolymers with controllable length.

Pathway-Controlled Aqueous Supramolecular Polymerization via Solvent-Dependent Chain Conformation Effects

Lorenz Borsdorf et al.

Summary: Solute-solvent interactions are crucial in various fields and have been recognized as an important factor in driving intermolecular association in aqueous media. However, the understanding of solute-solvent effects in complex self-assembly energy landscapes and pathway complexity is limited. This study unravels the role of solute-solvent interactions in controlling chain conformation effects and pathway selection in aqueous supramolecular polymerization. The results reveal previously underappreciated solvent-dependent chain conformation effects and their role in governing pathway complexity in aqueous media.

Multistep, site-selective noncovalent synthesis of two-dimensional block supramolecular polymers

Norihiko Sasaki et al.

Summary: Although the principles of noncovalent bonding are well understood, supramolecular noncovalent synthesis still cannot match the precision and complexity of organic and/or macromolecular covalent synthesis. In this study, we demonstrate the stepwise synthesis of block supramolecular polymers with precise control over their compositions and sequences using fluorinated alkyl chains on metal-porphyrin derivatives. This site selectivity enables the formation of toroidal structures through one-dimensional supramolecular polymerization and cyclization, followed by the formation of two-dimensional assemblies with concentric toroidal morphologies through secondary nucleation, elongation, and cyclization steps.

Bioinspired crowding directs supramolecular polymerisation

Nils Baeumer et al.

Summary: Crowding effects play a crucial role in the functionality of biological systems, but their role in artificial systems has been largely unexplored. In this study, the authors demonstrate that crowding effects have a strong and distinct control on the kinetics, pathways, and outcomes of supramolecular polymerization processes. The presence of a pre-formed supramolecular polymer as a crowding agent causes a model supramolecular polymer to undergo a morphological transformation in its self-assembly behavior, resulting in flower-like hierarchical assemblies. These results highlight the potential of accessing diverse morphologies and properties in supramolecular polymers by leveraging crowding effects.

Chirality-Controlled Supramolecular Donor-Acceptor Copolymerization with Distinct Energy Transfer Efficiency

Rui Liao et al.

Summary: Chirality plays a significant role in the field of supramolecular polymers, providing insights into the dynamic assembly process and enabling the development of chiroptical materials. This study demonstrates that the organization mode of comonomers in supramolecular donor-acceptor copolymers can be influenced by stereocommunication at the molecular level. The manipulation of stereogenic centers in the comonomer structures has a significant impact on the characteristics of supramolecular copolymers, which holds potential for chiral sensing, recognition, and optoelectronic applications.

Harmonizing Topological Features of Self-Assembled Fibers by Rosette-Mediated Random Supramolecular Copolymerization and Self-Sorting of Monomers by Photo-Cross-Linking

Sho Takahashi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an example of thermodynamically controlled random supramolecular copolymerization. By forming six-membered hydrogen-bonded rosette intermediates, the random copolymerization of two monomers with distinct molecular structures is achieved. The experimental results reveal the homopolymerization of one monomer in the high-temperature region and the incorporation of the other monomer in the medium-temperature region to form supramolecular copolymers.

Summary: In this study, a novel nonplanar-core monomer was used for polymerization, resulting in the formation of an alternating heterochiral supramolecular copolymer. The heterochiral copolymer displayed an alternating arrangement of H-bonded and polar p-stacked parts, which was found to be due to the effective cancellation of in-plane dipole moments between two thiophene amide moieties.

Stereoselective Primary and Secondary Nucleation Events in Multicomponent Seeded Supramolecular Polymerization

Souvik Sarkar et al.

Summary: Bioinspired, kinetically controlled seeded growth has been shown to provide length, dispersity, and sequence control on the primary structure of dynamic supramolecular polymers. However, command over the molecular organization at all hierarchical levels for the modulation of higher order structures of supramolecular polymers remains challenging. Surface-catalyzed secondary nucleation process offers exciting possibilities for topology control in synthetic macromolecular systems, but mechanistic insights into the molecular determinants and driving forces for the secondary nucleation event in synthetic systems are lacking. The study attempts to fill this gap by demonstrating molecular chirality control on primary and secondary nucleation events in seed-induced supramolecular polymerization, with kinetic experiments providing insights into the nucleation processes.

Distance Matters: Biasing Mechanism, Transfer of Asymmetry, and Stereomutation in N-Annulated Perylene Bisimide Supramolecular Polymers

Manuel A. Martinez et al.

Summary: The study explores the self-assembling features of two series of N-annulated perylene bisimides, highlighting the significant influence of the distance between the PBI core and the peripheral groups on chiroptical properties and supramolecular polymerization mechanism. The research also shows how attaching the peripheral groups directly to the N-annulated PBI core changes the self-assembling properties and leads to the formation of H-type aggregates with strong aggregation-caused quenching effects. Additionally, a solvent-controlled stereomutation is observed for chiral compounds, resulting in helical supramolecular polymers with different handedness depending on the solvent.
