Asymmetric Low-Frequency Pulsed Strategy Enables Ultralong CO2 Reduction Stability and Controllable Product Selectivity

Xiang-Da Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and efficient asymmetric low-frequency pulsed strategy (ALPS) was proposed to enhance the stability and selectivity of the Cu-dimethylpyrazole complex Cu3(DMPz)3 catalyst in electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR). The ALPS method achieved high selectivities for CH4 and C2H4, as well as ultralong stability. Microscopy and spectroscopy measurements revealed the formation of highly dispersed and active Cu-based clusters with modulated Cu oxidation states under the ALPS methods.

Summary: This study reports a novel molecular catalyst for the selective electroreduction of CO2 into CO. The catalyst is immobilized on a solid material, offering advantages such as easy separation of products and catalysts, efficient electron transfer, and high stability. The results demonstrate that the catalyst exhibits high selectivity not only in organic solvents but also in water, achieving high CO2 electroreduction efficiency.

Probing the Synergistic Effects of Mg2+on CO2 Reduction Reaction on CoPc by In Situ Electrochemical Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Yu-Qi Wang et al.

Summary: We report an in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) study on the synergistic effect of Mg2+ in the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) catalyzed by cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc). Our study reveals that Mg2+ enhances the adsorption of CO2 on CoPc, resulting in the formation of CoPc-CO2-Mg2+ complexes.

Noncovalent immobilization of a nickel cyclam catalyst on carbon electrodes for CO2 reduction using aqueous electrolyte

Francesca Greenwell et al.

Summary: A nickel cyclam catalyst modified with pyrene has been synthesised and characterised, showing activity towards CO production in aqueous electrolyte. The non-covalent interaction between the pyrene functional group and carbon electrode supports helps to maintain the electroactivity of the catalyst.

Effect of Electrolyte Composition and Concentration on Pulsed Potential Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Rileigh Casebolt et al.

Summary: The relationship between electrolyte concentration/composition and product distribution for pulsed potential electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO(2)R) differs from that of constant potential eCO(2)R. Pulsed potential eCO(2)R suppresses H-2 formation relative to CH4 due to periodic desorption of surface protons, while constant potential eCO(2)R favors H-2 production. Increasing KCl concentration during pulsed potential eCO(2)R greatly enhances C-2 product formation.

Dynamic Boundary Layer Simulation of Pulsed CO2 Electrolysis on a Copper Catalyst

Justin C. Bui et al.

Summary: The study found that pulsed electrolysis induces dynamic changes in pH and CO2 concentration near the Cu surface, leading to an enhanced faradaic efficiency of C2+ products. By exploring various pulse shapes, operating conditions that maximize the rate of C2+ product formation while minimizing the rates of other products formation can be established.

Selectivity Control of Cu Nanocrystals in a Gas-Fed Flow Cell through CO2 Pulsed Electroreduction

Hyo Sang Jeon et al.

Summary: This study utilized a pulsed CO2 electroreduction reaction approach to adjust product distribution in a gas-fed flow cell for industrially relevant current densities. By comparing the selectivity of Cu catalysts under potentiostatic and pulsed electrolysis conditions, it was found that the enhanced product selectivity in the latter case can be attributed to structural modifications and local pH effects. The differences in catalyst selectivity were observed to influence the formation of specific products, such as C-2 and CH4, through morphological reconstruction and consumption of OH - species near the catalyst surface.
