Steering Large Magnetic Exchange Coupling in Nanographenes near the Closed-Shell to Open-Shell Transition

Kalyan Biswas et al.

Summary: This study explores three families of nanographenes (A, B, and C) and finds that open-shell nanographenes exhibit the strongest magnetic exchange coupling, especially near the transition from closed-shell to open-shell states. Experimental results confirm the predictions, and two specific nanographenes show record values of magnetic exchange coupling measured on the Au(111) surface, close to 200 meV. This research provides insights for designing carbon nanomaterials with robust magnetic ground states.

Predicting Magnetic Coupling and Spin-Polarization Energy in Triangulene Analogues

Hongde Yu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a benchmark dataset of 25 magnetic systems, including triangulene monomer, dimer, and their analogues, to evaluate the performance of 22 commonly used density functional theory (DFT) methods in material science. The results show that achieving quantitative accuracy with small relative errors is currently not feasible. PBE0, M06-2X, and MN15 functionals are able to predict the correct electronic ground state for all systems and have the lowest mean absolute error for predicting Delta E (spin) and J. Therefore, they can serve as starting points for higher-level methods such as GW or the random phase approximation. Other functionals that fail to predict the ground state are not recommended for metal-free magnetic systems.

Exploiting Molecular Symmetry to Quantitatively Map the Excited-State Landscape of Iron-Sulfur Clusters

Brighton A. Skeel et al.

Summary: Cuboidal [Fe4S4] clusters are common cofactors in biological redox chemistry. The arrangement of the valences and the population of excited-state valence isomers in these clusters have been challenging to understand. However, by studying synthetic [Fe4S4]1+ clusters with solution C3v symmetry, the ground-state valence isomer landscape can be simplified to a two-level system, allowing for quantification of energy differences between valence isomers.

Emergent Spin Frustration in Neutral Mixed-Valence 2D Conjugated Polymers: A Potential Quantum Materials Platform

Isaac Alcon et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional conjugated polymers (2DCPs) are organic 2D materials composed of arrays of carbon sp(2) centers connected by pi-conjugated linkers, and they are gaining attention for their potential applications in device technologies. In this study, we use first-principles calculations to predict the electronic and magnetic properties of a new class of hexagonally connected neutral mixed-valence 2DCPs. We find that these materials exhibit emergent superexchange-mediated antiferromagnetic interactions, making them a highly promising platform for the realization of all-organic quantum materials.

Observation of the Magnetic Ground State of the Two Smallest Triangular Nanographenes

Elia Turco et al.

Summary: We report the first synthesis of unsubstituted phenalenyl on a Au(111) surface, which is achieved by combining in-solution synthesis of the hydro-precursor and on-surface activation by atomic manipulation. Single-molecule structural and electronic characterizations confirm its open-shell S = 1/2 ground state that gives rise to Kondo screening on the Au(111) surface. These magnetic nanographenes can serve as building blocks for the realization of new exotic quantum phases of matter.

On-surface synthesis of triangulene trimers via dehydration reaction

Suqin Cheng et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized high-spin triangulene trimers on Au(111) through a surface-assisted dehydration reaction. Two approaches were compared, and the results showed that the dehydration reaction had higher chemoselectivity and product yield compared to the alkyne trimerization approach. The high-spin ground state and magnetic interactions among the triangulene units were identified, which are crucial for carbon-based spintronic devices.

Theory of intermolecular exchange in coupled spin-21 nanographenes

David Jacob et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microscopic mechanisms for intermolecular exchange in open-shell nanographenes. Three mechanisms, including Hund's ferromagnetic exchange, superexchange driven by intermolecular hybridization, and Coulomb-driven superexchange, have been identified. The Coulomb-driven superexchange can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic, providing an explanation for the Ovchinnikov-Lieb rules.

Controlling the magnetic properties of two-dimensional carbon-based Kagome polymers

Khalid N. Anindya et al.

Summary: By utilizing first principles calculations, a promising approach to control the magnetic properties of two-dimensional organic polymers based on all-carbon triangulene monomers has been explored. Doping the polymers with boron or nitrogen atoms switches the ground state from antiferromagnetic to stable ferromagnetic phase, leading to highly dispersed spin-polarized semiconducting bands and high carrier mobilities in B-rich cases.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of an open-shell [7]triangulene quantum ring molecule on Au(111) through surface-assisted cyclodehydrogenation of a rationally designed kekulene derivative. Bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (BR-STM) and dI/dV mapping revealed the molecular structure and edge-localized electronic states of [7]TQR, confirming its retention of an open-shell septuple ground state on Au(111). This work demonstrates a new approach for designing high-spin graphene quantum rings for future quantum devices.

Auxiliary Atomic Relay Center Facilitates Enhanced Magnetic Couplings in Blatter's Radical

Ashima Bajaj et al.

Summary: Recent progress in achieving strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions in organic diradicals has shown great promise for technological applications. In this study, a unique combination of strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions with molecular rigidity using the superstable Blatter's radical as a spin source is reported. The investigation of planar analogues of the Blatter's radical coupled with nitronyl nitroxide (NN) through computational methods reveals significant modulation in exchange couplings, especially for a certain class of Blatter-NN diradicals, due to variation in spin density distribution and molecular torsional angles. Additionally, it is demonstrated that annulation in organic molecules opens up an additional pathway for coupling via an auxiliary X-atom acting as the atomic relay center, manipulating the magnitude of exchange couplings.

Collective Magnetism in 2D Polymer Made of C-Doped Triangular Boron Nitride Nanoflakes

Khalid N. Anindya et al.

Summary: The electronic and magnetic properties of a 2D polymer doped with C atoms from tBN monomers were investigated using first-principles DFT calculations. The C-doped polymer showed spin-polarized ground state and open-shell semiconductor behavior, with both Dirac and flat bands existing near Fermi level. The collective magnetism between C dopants separated by 1.0 nm was suppressed in copolymer arrangement, leading to semiconducting behavior without spin-polarization and localized states around Fermi level. These results suggest the potential for long range metal-free magnetic ordering and high carrier mobilities in 2D organic spintronic applications.
