Optical Spin Polarization of a Narrow-Linewidth Electron-Spin Qubit in a Chromophore/Stable-Radical System

Yunfan Qiu et al.

Summary: Photoexcited organic chromophores combined with stable radicals can be used as candidates for quantum information applications. In this study, the synthesis and characterization of 1,6,7,12-Tetra-(4-tert-butylphenoxy)-perylene-3,4 : 9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (tpPDI) linked to a partially deuterated alpha,gamma-bisdiphenylene-beta-phenylallyl radical (BDPA-d(16)) were performed using time-resolved optical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. The results showed efficient generation of a quartet state (Q) followed by a spin-polarized doublet ground state (D-0) upon photoexcitation of tpPDI-BDPA-d(16).

Photo-CIDNP in Solid State

Joerg Matysik et al.

Summary: Photo-CIDNP is a phenomenon of nuclear polarization created by the spin-chemical evolution of spin-correlated radical pairs, which can occur in gases, liquids, and solids. The solid-state photo-CIDNP effect observed under magic-angle spinning has led to the development of photo-CIDNP MAS NMR as an analytical method.

Summary: The mechanism of spin polarization transfer from a photogenerated spin-correlated radical pair to a stable radical was studied. It was found that spin polarization on the stable radical is generated by asymmetry in the charge recombination pathways.

Spinning-Driven Dynamic Nuclear Polarization with Optical Pumping

Krishnendu Kundu et al.

Summary: A new method for solid-state nuclear spin hyperpolarization is proposed, combining the cross-effect mechanism and electron spin optical hyperpolarization in rotating solids. The study demonstrates the possibility of optical hyperpolarization at low temperatures and low field, and further explores its field dependence to optimize high-field electron spin hyperpolarization. Numerical simulations show that optically pumped magic-angle spinning dynamic nuclear polarization (MAS-DNP) could achieve breakthrough enhancements at very high magnetic fields without the need for microwave irradiation.

1H Detected Relayed Dynamic Nuclear Polarization

Pierrick Berruyer et al.

Summary: Recently, methods based on the dynamics of 1H nuclear hyperpolarization in magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR experiments have been used to determine mesoscale structures in complex materials. However, these methods have low sensitivity and have only been feasible using indirect detection of 1H polarization through dilute heteronuclei. In this study, relayed-DNP (R-DNP) combined with fast MAS enables direct 1H detection, accelerating experiment times by a factor of 16. Varying the MAS rate allows for recording a series of independent R-DNP curves that can be jointly analyzed to accurately determine domain sizes.

Mapping 13C hyperfine couplings and exchange interactions in short-lived charge separated states of rigid donor-bridge-acceptor dyads

Ivan Zhukov et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed experimental investigation on reversible photo-induced intramolecular charge separation using nuclear magnetic resonance detection of chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization. By measuring the coupling constants of isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine interactions at individual C-13 sites, the influence of different side groups in the bridging moiety on electron withdrawing strength was traced. The results provide a reliable basis for determining the spin density distribution in the charge separated state of such dyads, in combination with similar data obtained for the H-1 positions of the compounds.

Hyperpolarization transfer pathways in inorganic materials

Snaedis Bjorgvinsdottir et al.

Summary: Dynamic nuclear polarization is used to hyperpolarize proton-free inorganic materials in magic angle spinning NMR experiments, with hyperpolarization generated on the surface and propagated towards the bulk through spin diffusion. Two-dimensional experiments are used to study spin diffusion from the surface to the bulk, showing efficient transfer of hyperpolarization from surface to multiple bulk sites simultaneously, as well as rapid polarization exchange between bulk sites. Evidence is also presented for polarization exchange between different sites on the surface in cases of disorder.

Photochemically Induced Dynamic Nuclear Polarization of Heteronuclear Singlet Order

Kirill F. Sheberstov et al.

Summary: Photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (photo-CIDNP) is a method to hyperpolarize nuclear spins using light. The study demonstrates hyperpolarization of H-1 and C-13 nuclear spins under Earth's magnetic field and zero- to ultralow-field (ZULF) conditions, with significant enhancement of NMR signals. The method is simple, cost-efficient, and applicable to a variety of molecular systems known to exhibit photo-CIDNP.

Achieving Maximal Enhancement of Electron Spin Polarization in Stable Nitroxyl Radicals at Room Temperature

Vinayak Rane

Summary: Enhancing the polarization of spin levels at room temperature through the optimization of parameters and synthesis of specific adducts has been studied. The role of photophysical quenching process in generating large ESP is highlighted, and a potential route for the generation of photostable radical-chromophore adducts is suggested. The synthesized diradical adduct demonstrated enhanced photochemical stability, paving the way for a wide range of applications in DNP, spintronics, and magnetometers.

Summary: Research has shown that spin-polarized radical pair spectra are observed in chemical and photosynthetic systems when the distance between the two radicals is restricted, leading to the formation of spin-correlated radical pairs. These spin-correlated radical pairs can serve as spin qubit pairs, allowing for manipulation of spin dynamics to study various quantum phenomena in the field of quantum information science.
