From 8-to 18-Cluster Electrons Superatoms: Evaluation via DFT Calculations of the Ligand-Protected W@Au12(dppm)6 Cluster Displaying Distinctive Electronic and Optical Properties

Jianyu Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, a phosphine-protected [W@Au12(dppm)6] cluster was constructed, which has the same total number of valence electrons as the characterized [Au13(dppm)6]5+ homometallic counterpart, but is considered an 8-electron superatom. The differences between 8- and 18-electron species were investigated, and it was found that the 18-electron species exhibited efficient charge transfer and is interesting for optoelectronic devices and black absorbers applications.

IrAu12 superatom modified by chiral diphosphines: doping-induced enhancement of chiroptical activity

Haru Hirai et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of single-atom doping on the chiroptical properties of gold superatoms were investigated. It was found that single-atom doping can improve the chiroptical properties of gold superatoms, and this study provides a rational guide for enhancing their chiroptical activity.

Superatom-in-Superatom Nanoclusters: Synthesis, Structure, and Photoluminescence

Hanseok Yi et al.

Summary: We present a new strategy to dope a thiolate-protected Ag-25 nanocluster with open d-shell group 8 (Ru, Os) and 9 (Ir) metals by forming metal hydride (RuH2, OsH2, IrH) superatoms with a closed d-shell. The synthesized superatom-in-superatom nanoclusters exhibit dopant-dependent photoluminescence properties. Comparative studies reveal that both radiative and nonradiative processes are significantly influenced by the dopant.

Hydride-containing 2-Electron Pd/Cu Superatoms as Catalysts for Efficient Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

Rhone Brocha P. Silalahi et al.

Summary: The first hydride-containing 2-electron palladium/copper alloys, PdHCu11 and PdHCu12, were synthesized. X-ray diffraction reveals that the PdHCu11 and PdHCu12 kernels consist of a central PdH unit encapsulated within a vertex-missing Cu-11 cuboctahedron and complete Cu-12 cuboctahedron, respectively. PdHCu11 shows excellent HER activity, with an onset potential of -0.05 V (at 10 mA cm(-2)) and consistent HER activity during 1000 cycles in 0.5 M H2SO4.

Controlled Shell and Kernel Modifications of Atomically Precise Pd/Ag Superatomic Nanoclusters

Yu-Rong Ni et al.

Summary: The first 8-electron Pd/Ag superatomic alloys with an interstitial hydride [PdHAg19(dtp)(12)] and [PdHAg20(dtp)(12)](+) are reported. Addition of a single Ag atom to [PdHAg19(dtp)(12)] through the reaction of trifluoroacetic acid yields [PdHAg20(dtp)(12)](+) in 55% yield. Further modification of the shell results in the formation of [PdAg21(dtp)(12)](+) via an internal redox reaction. The interstitial hydride in [PdHAg19(dtp)(12)] and [PdHAg20(dtp)(12)](+) contributes its 1s(1) electron and occupies a PdAg3 tetrahedron.

Doping-Mediated Energy-Level Engineering of M@Au12 Superatoms (M=Pd, Pt, Rh, Ir) for Efficient Photoluminescence and Photocatalysis

Haru Hirai et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of MAu12(dppe)(5)Cl-2 compounds with icosahedral structures were synthesized and their electronic structures, photoluminescence, and photocatalytic properties were systematically investigated. Doping an M element at the lower left of the periodic table expanded the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO, resulting in enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield. MAu12 (M=Pt, Rh, or Ir) exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than Au-13.

Hydride-Containing Eight-Electron Pt/Ag Superatoms: Structure, Bonding, and Multi-NMR Studies

Tzu-Hao Chiu et al.

Summary: Recent research has found that the encapsulated hydride in hydride-doped noble metal nanoclusters is part of the superatom core, but its precise location has not been experimentally determined. In this study, the position of a four-coordinated hydride in a hydride-doped eight-electron platinum/silver alloy nanocluster was determined for the first time using neutron diffraction.

Surface modifications of eight-electron palladium silver superatomic alloys

Subrat Kumar Barik et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and characterization of a series of atomically defined dithio- and diselenophosphate-protected eight-electron superatomic palladium-doped silver nanoclusters, including an unprecedented pair of selenolate-protected isomers. The solid state structures revealed different metal frameworks from the parent cluster due to the distribution of capping silver(I) atoms around a Pd@Ag-12 centered icosahedron with different symmetries. The crystallization of the reaction product led to the co-crystallization of two isomers in the unit cell, a first among selenolate-protected nanoclusters.

Alloying dichalcogenolate-protected Ag21 eight-electron nanoclusters: a DFT investigation

Franck Gam et al.

Summary: The effects of isoelectronic doping with heteroatoms belonging to groups 9-12 on dichalcogenolato nanoclusters were systematically investigated using DFT calculations. Different structure types were found to be energetically close, and trends in heteroatom site occupation preference across the group 9-12 family were revealed through calculations and supported by experimental results. TD-DFT calculations showed a significant effect of doping on optical properties, suggesting potential for research on modulating luminescence properties in related complexes.

Photoluminescence of Doped Superatoms M@Au12 (M = Ru, Rh, Ir) Homoleptically Capped by (Ph2)PCH2P(Ph2): Efficient Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Ru@Au12

Shinjiro Takano et al.

Summary: A series of doped gold superatoms M@Au-12 were synthesized and the Ru@Au-12 superatom exhibited room-temperature phosphorescence in deaerated dichloromethane with a quantum yield of 0.37. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the efficient phosphorescence is attributed to rapid intersystem crossing between singlet and triplet excited states with structural and energy similarities.
