Single Atom and Metal Cluster Catalysts in Organic Reactions: From the Solvent to the Solid

Judit Oliver-Meseguer et al.

Summary: This review explores the methodology of transforming ligand-less single metal atoms and nanoclusters into recoverable and reusable solid catalysts. It aims to investigate how to speciate active single metal atoms and clusters during homogeneous catalysis in solution, and then transfer them to solid supports for catalyzing organic reactions. In many cases, this translation results in single atom catalysts (SACs) or stable, reusable, and sometimes chemoselective catalysts using ultrasmall metal aggregates.

Fully exposed palladium cluster catalysts enable hydrogen production from nitrogen heterocycles

Chunyang Dong et al.

Summary: The size of supported metal species has a significant impact on their catalytic activity, but the structure sensitivity at the atomic scale has not been well understood. In this study, the catalytic contribution of various surface palladium species in a specific reaction was quantified. The results show that fully exposed palladium clusters are the optimal sites for the reaction, while palladium single atoms are almost inactive. Therefore, constructing fully exposed metal clusters without spectators can maximize the reactivity and atomic efficiency of noble metals.

Liquid-liquid-phase Synthesis of exo-Vinylene Carbonates from Primary Propargylic Alcohols: Catalyst Design and Recycling

Chloe Johnson et al.

Summary: A method to separate catalyst from EVC products of primary propargylic alcohols carboxylative cyclisation has been developed using liquid-liquid phase synthesis with lipophilic silver(I) carboxylate salts. The EVC monomers for poly(urethane) and poly(carbonate) synthesis were isolated in good yields in the non-miscible polar phase following simple liquid-liquid phase separation. In situ reaction monitoring by ReactIR provided insights into reaction kinetics and helped achieve good EVC selectivity under optimized conditions, with minimal silver leaching into the product phase confirmed by ICP-MS.

Sequential Growth as a Mechanism of Silver-Glutathione Monolayer-Protected Cluster Formation

Yeakub Zaker et al.

Summary: Silver monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) are a new class of small metal nanoparticles with discrete sizes and unique properties that can be controlled. The formation mechanism of silver-glutathione MPCs is established through a sequential growth model, which explains how MPCs systematically grow and transform from one known species to another. The interplay between relative MPC stabilities and reaction kinetics directs reactions, providing tools for the synthesis of specific MPCs in high yield.
