Cation-Templated Assembly of 613 and 623 Metalla-Links

Hai-Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: By utilizing multiple stacking interactions between components, two kinds of metalla-links with molecular Borromean rings (6(2)(3) links) and head-to-tail cyclic [3]catenanes (6(1)(3) links) were successfully synthesized in high yield using tri-mu-methoxyl-dinuclear complexes as unusual cationic guests during coordination-driven assembly. The topology of these intricate structures was controlled by strategically selecting different dipyridyl ligands, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography and mass spectrometry analysis. The behavior of these metalla-links in solution was further studied using NMR techniques.

Encapsulating Semiconductor Quantum Dots in Supramolecular Cages Enables Ultrafast Guest-Host Electron and Vibrational Energy Transfer

Shuai Lu et al.

Summary: In the field of supramolecular chemistry, host-guest systems have been widely used to encapsulate various substrates, but their application is limited to small molecules. This study presents a water-soluble metallo-supramolecular hexagonal prism with a large hydrophobic cavity by attaching multiple polyethylene glycol chains to the building blocks. The assembled prisms can encapsulate quantum dots with diameters below 5.0 nm. Furthermore, the supramolecular cage surrounding each quantum dot effectively modifies their photophysics by increasing the rates of relaxation processes. This work expands the substrate scope in host-guest systems and provides a new approach to tune the optical properties of quantum dots.

Stimuli-Responsive Topological Transformation of a Molecular Borromean Ring via Controlled Oxidation of Thioether Moieties

Hai-Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: A Cp*-Rh based D-shaped binuclear metallacycle and a template-free molecular Borromean ring were synthesized successfully using the semi-rigid thioether dipyridyl ligand Bptmb. The controlled oxidation of thioethers led to the topological transformation from binuclear metallacycles and a Borromean ring to tetranuclear metallacycles. The strategy employed in this study can be considered a new form of stimuli-responsive post-synthesis modification.
