[n]Cycloparaphenylene-Pillar[5]arene Bismacrocycles: Their Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Multiple Guest Recognition Properties

Youzhi Xu et al.

Summary: Both pillar[n]arenes (P[n]As) and [n]cycloparaphenylenes ([n]CPPs) have been synthesized and integrated into bismacrocycles [n]CPP-P[5]A. The bismacrocycles exhibit higher photoluminescence quantum yield (phi(F)) compared to the corresponding [n]CPPs. Chiral enantiomers (pR)/(pS)-[8]CPP-P[5]A with circularly polarized luminescence (g(lum)approximate to 0.02) were successfully isolated, and the bismacrocycles showed high affinity and specificity towards pyridinium salts and fullerene derivatives. Transient absorption studies revealed photo-induced electron transfer in [10]CPP-P[5]A superset of C-60 complex. The results suggest the potential applications of [n]CPP-P[5]A in CPL-active materials, multiple guest recognition, and supramolecular polymer preparation.

Machine-Learned Electronically Excited States with the MolOrbImage Generated from the Molecular Ground State

Ziyong Chen et al.

Summary: We propose a general machine learning framework for probing electronic state properties using the novel quantum descriptor MolOrbImage. Each pixel of MolOrbImage records the quantum information generated by integrating physical operators with pairs of molecular orbital (MO) states. Inspired by the success of deep convolutional neural networks (NNs) in computer vision, we implement a convolutional-layer-dominated MO-NN model. Using MolOrbImages of orbital energy and electron repulsion integral, the MO-NN model achieves promising prediction accuracies for transition energies to low-lying singlet (MAE < 0.16 eV) and triplet (MAE < 0.14 eV) states against the ADC(2)/cc-pVTZ reference. An apparent improvement in predicting oscillator strength, which was previously challenging, is demonstrated. Moreover, the transferability test indicates remarkable extrapolation capacity of the MO-NN model for out of data set systems.

Bonding properties of molecular cerium oxides tuned by the 4f-block from ab initio perspective

Ziyong Chen et al.

Summary: Probing chemical bonding in molecules containing lanthanide elements is computationally challenging due to the large valence space, relativistic effects, and electron correlation. This study quantifies the many-body nature of Ce-O bonding and the roles of 4f orbitals in the coordination environment of Ce. The overlap between Ce 4f and O 2p orbitals enhances Ce-O bond covalency and directs the molecular geometry, modulating bonding patterns of cerium oxide molecules.
