Mechanically gated formation of donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts enabling mechanochemical multicolour soft lithography

Anna C. Overholts et al.

Summary: Mechanophores are stress-sensitive molecules that undergo productive chemical transformations under mechanical force. A new platform has been introduced to achieve mechanically gated multicolour chromogenic reactivity. This platform is based on an activated furan precursor, which, when mechanochemically activated, generates a diverse range of color variations. This system has been applied to create a complex multicolour composite image through localized compression and reaction with different secondary amines.

Fracture Detection in Bio-Glues with Fluorescent-Protein-Based Optical Force Probes

Yu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study reports the development of a series of ratiometric optical force probes (OFPs) based on fluorescent-protein-dye and protein-protein conjugates, and their incorporation into genetically engineered bio-glues. The OFPs efficiently modulate Forster resonance energy transfer upon force application, reporting on force-induced molecular alterations independent of concentration and fluorescence intensity. By fluorescence spectroscopy in solution and in the solid state, as well as fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, stress concentrations are visualized and adhesive and cohesive failure in the fracture zone is differentiated.

Multicolor Chromism from a Single Chromophore through Synergistic Coupling of Mechanochromic and Photochromic Subunits

Weiye He et al.

Summary: We present a versatile mechanophore that exhibits vividly detectable and light-regulable multicolor mechanochromism. The optical properties of this material are achieved through the synergistic coupling of mechanochromic bis-rhodamine (Rh) and photochromic bisthienylethene (BTE). By incorporating this bis-mechanophore into poly(methyl acrylate), we can mechanically activate it under sonication, resulting in changes in the distribution of different colored and fluorescent Rh products. The orthogonal use of the photochromic reaction of the BTE core further enhances the mechanochromism and regulates the mechanofluorescence in polymers.

Swelling-induced Mechanochromism in Multinetwork Polymers

Takuma Watabe et al.

Summary: We present a new method for achieving swelling-induced mechanochemistry using a multinetwork (MN) strategy, which allows polymer networks to repeatedly swell with monomers and solvents. The isotropic expansion of the first network (FN) provides sufficient force to drive the mechanochemical scission of a radical-based mechanophore, difluorenylsuccinonitrile (DFSN). The MN polymers not only demonstrate the ability to modify networks through swelling force, but also show tunable reactivity of the dissociative unit through hierarchical network architecture design.

Bridging pico-to-nanonewtons with a ratiometric force probe for monitoring nanoscale polymer physics before damage

Ryota Kotani et al.

Summary: Understanding the transmission of nanoscale forces is crucial in polymer physics. Physical approaches have limitations in analyzing the local force distribution in condensed environments. This study presents a conformationally flexible dual-fluorescence force probe, enabling ratiometric analysis of the distribution of local forces in a stretched polymer chain network. Chemical control of the probe location reveals a higher local stress concentration at crosslinkers than at main chains, especially in a strain-hardening region.

Digital photoprogramming of liquid-crystal superstructures featuring intrinsic chiral photoswitches

Zhigang Zheng et al.

Summary: The development of a unique intrinsic chiral photoswitch allows for digitally controllable, selectable and extractable multiple stable reflection states for applications in anti-counterfeiting technology. An anti-counterfeiting technique embedded with diverse microstructures, featuring color-tunability, erasability, reversibility, multi-stability and viewing-angle dependency of pre-recorded patterns, has been established using photoresponsive superstructures. This strategy enables dynamic helical transformation from the molecular and supramolecular to the macroscopic level, demonstrating the practicality of photoprogramming photonics.

Conformer Ring Flip Enhances Mechanochromic Performance of ansa-Donor-Acceptor-Donor Mechanochromic Torsional Springs

Raphael Hertel et al.

Summary: In this study, we used a series of thiophene-flanked quinoxalines as molecular torsional springs for force sensing in bulk polymers at room temperature. Through detailed spectroscopy and calculations, we identified the thiophene ring flip as the major part of the overall mechanochromic response. The thiophene ring flip requires much smaller forces than planarization of the DAD spring, allowing for sensing of tiny forces and expanding the sensitivity and force range of conformational mechanochromophores.

Sterically Hindered Diarylethenes with a Benzobis(thiadiazole) Bridge: Enantiospecific Transformation and Reversible Photosuperstructures

Mengqi Li et al.

Summary: Photochromic diarylethenes with reversible regulation by external light irradiation have important applications in various fields. However, there are still unresolved issues regarding the modulation of bistability, reduction of photoinactive conformers, and achievement of reversible enantiospecific transformation. To address these issues, we developed a diarylethene system based on benzobis(thiadiazole) that successfully separated multiple conformers, resulting in higher photocyclization quantum yields and enantiospecific photoreactions.

Distal conformational locks on ferrocene mechanophores guide reaction pathways for increased mechanochemical reactivity

Yudi Zhang et al.

Summary: Metallocenes are attractive mechanophores due to their stability in the absence of force but reactivity under tension. Covalently bridging the cyclopentadienyl ligands of ferrocenes in a polymer alters their mechanochemical reactivity, leading to faster dissociation through a peeling mechanism. Distal attachments can restrict dissociation mechanism to peeling, increasing dissociation rate constant by several orders of magnitude.

Rotaxane-Based Dual Function Mechanophores Exhibiting Reversible and Irreversible Responses

Tatsuya Muramatsu et al.

Summary: The article introduces rotaxane-based supramolecular mechanophores that exhibit both reversible and irreversible fluorescence changes, triggered by exploiting molecular shuttling and force-induced dethreading. The design allows the luminophore to slide away from the quencher when force is applied, resulting in fluorescence, but if the force is too high, irreversible changes occur when the luminophore-carrying ring slips past the stopper and dethreading happens.
