Reticular Design of Precise Linker Installation into a Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework to Reinforce Hydrolytic Stability

Yongwei Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a Zr-based MOF, NU-600, was used to demonstrate the construction of multi-component MOFs with unprecedented complexity and control by inserting two linear linkers with different lengths into distinct pockets. It was found that increasing the connectivity of Zr6 nodes remarkably reinforced the hydrolytic stability of these linker-inserted MOFs while maintaining their water uptake capacity and pore-filling pressure. Additionally, introducing hydrophilic -OH groups into the linkers effectively shifted the pore-filling step to lower partial pressures. This methodology provides a powerful strategy to enhance the structural stability of other MOF frameworks and promotes advancements in fundamental sciences and practical applications.

A ligand insertion mechanism for cooperative NH3 capture in metal-organic frameworks

Benjamin E. R. Snyder et al.

Summary: In this study, a reversible three-dimensional framework that binds ammonia by cooperative insertion into its metal-carboxylate bonds to form a dense, one-dimensional coordination polymer is reported. This unusual adsorption mechanism provides considerable intrinsic thermal management and, at high pressures and temperatures, cooperative ammonia uptake gives rise to large working capacities. The threshold pressure for ammonia adsorption can further be tuned by almost five orders of magnitude through simple synthetic modifications, pointing to a broader strategy for the development of energy-efficient ammonia adsorbents.

A single-molecule van der Waals compass

Boyuan Shen et al.

Summary: Single-molecule imaging is a challenging yet beneficial technique for investigating intermolecular interactions at the molecular level, particularly van der Waals interactions at the sub-nanometre scale under confinement conditions. The use of a rotating para-xylene molecule as a pointer allows for real-space imaging and identification of changes in van der Waals interactions related to channel geometry. This study not only provides insight into host-guest interactions in porous materials, but also encourages further exploration of other single-molecule behaviors using electron microscopy techniques.

Hydrophobicity: a key factor en route to applications of metal-organic frameworks

Soumya Mukherjee et al.

Summary: Water, while essential for life, negatively impacts the performance of solid adsorbents/catalysts in its vapor and liquid forms. Recent advancements in high surface hydrophobicity have led to the realization of water-stable MOFs. The critical analysis of hydrophobic MOFs and their composites provides a promising outlook for future applications in energy and environmental sustainability.
