Orthoquinone-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks with Ordered Channel Structures for Ultrahigh Performance Aqueous Zinc-Organic Batteries

Shibing Zheng et al.

Summary: Elaborate molecular design is crucial for improving the performance of rechargeable aqueous zinc-organic batteries. In this study, a novel orthoquinone-based covalent organic framework cathode with ordered channel structures (BT-PTO COF) was designed for an ultrahigh-performance aqueous zinc-organic battery. The ordered channel structure facilitated ion transfer and enabled the COF to follow a redox pseudocapacitance mechanism, resulting in a high reversible capacity and exceptional long-term cyclability. Additionally, a co-insertion mechanism involving Zn2+ and H+ was discovered for the first time, leading to ultra-fast kinetics and unprecedented specific power and energy density. This work presents a superior organic material for zinc batteries and offers a design concept for future high-performance organic cathodes.

Outside-In Nanostructure Fabricated on LiCoO2 Surface for High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries

Shulan Mao et al.

Summary: The energy density of batteries with lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) can be maximized by creating an outside-in oriented nanostructure on LiCoO2 crystals. This structure provides physical protection for the cathodes and electrolytes, while promoting lithium ion diffusion and stabilizing lattice oxygen. As a result, the battery exhibits high energy density retention even after multiple cycles.

Redox-Active Covalent Organic Frameworks with Nickel-Bis(dithiolene) Units as Guiding Layers for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Si-Wen Ke et al.

Summary: The combination of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) opens up new possibilities for designing advanced materials. In this study, two COFs based on Ni-bis(dithiolene) units and imine bonds were constructed, bridging the gap between traditional MOFs and COFs. These COFs showed high surface area, good conductivity, and high chemical stability, making them suitable for use as lithium metal anodes in high-energy-density battery systems.

Vinylene-Linked 2D Conjugated Covalent Organic Frameworks by Wittig Reactions

Yannan Liu et al.

Summary: The ability to efficiently synthesize vinylene-linked two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (V-2D-COFs) is crucial for their potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics. In this study, the E/Z selectivity of the Wittig reaction was tailored by using a suitable catalyst and increasing the reaction temperature, resulting in the successful synthesis of four crystalline V-2D-COFs. The high charge carrier mobilities and good crystallinity of these V-2D-COFs were demonstrated through non-contact terahertz spectroscopy analysis.

Summary: Capacitors with microporous electrodes show enhanced Faradaic pseudo-activity, especially when combined with a composite covalent organic framework (COF)-carbon electrode with redox-active KI. The inclusion of KI in H2SO4 electrolyte significantly increases the gravimetric specific capacitance of solid-state capacitors, while the imine-COF maintains 89% capacity even after 10,000 cycles of operation.

Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study constructed two-dimensional CCPs using inactive transition-metal ions as nodes to achieve high reversible capacity and remarkable capacity retention by storing cations and anions through redox reactions of only ligands. In contrast, CCPs with Cu2+ nodes showed poorer cyclability when both ligands and metal ions underwent redox reactions, emphasizing the importance of redox reactions of only ligands for long-term cycle life.
