Rapid crystallization of Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 glass ceramics via ultra-fast high-temperature sintering (UHS)

Jinghua Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a new ultra-fast high-temperature sintering technique was proposed to achieve reactive consolidation and crystallization of the solid electrolyte in a single step within 16 minutes. Compared to conventional crystallization, the samples produced using this technique exhibited better phase purity, reduced Li loss, and improved ionic conductivity. In fact, the specimens achieved a crystallinity of 90% and an ionic conductivity as high as 1.31 x 10(-4) S cm(-1).

Reduced interfacial stresses in laminated ceramics during flash sintering enabled by an extremely low uniaxial viscosity

Weiwei Xiao et al.

Summary: The interfacial tensile stresses of laminated ceramics during conventional sintering (CS), field assisted sintering technique (FAST), and flash sintering (FS) were compared. It was found that the interfacial tensile stress in constrained FS is significantly lower than those of both CS and FAST, and can only be explained by an extremely low uniaxial viscosity of the materials achieved during FS. The study also revealed that the electrical resistivity of the materials plays a key role in the reduction of the uniaxial viscosity.

Microstructure and ionic conductivities of NASICON-type Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 solid electrolytes produced by cold sintering assisted process

Hong Cai et al.

Summary: By using the cold sintering process (CSP), Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) ceramics were pre-densified at reduced temperature and exhibited room temperature ionic conductivity. Subsequent post-annealing significantly improved the grain boundary conductivity and total conductivity, resulting in a conductivity that is among the best reported values. The CSP-assisted process effectively eliminates insulating phases and promotes crack-free microstructure, leading to enhanced conductivity.

Flash sintering with concurrent crystallization of Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 glass

Joao Campos et al.

Summary: Single-phase Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 NaSICON glass-ceramic is obtained through flash-sinter crystallization, which is a new method. Controlling the current increase during the flash event is necessary to avoid overheating and melting of the samples. A processing map for flash sinter-crystallization of Li1.5Al0.5-Ge1.5(PO4)3 is developed based on current density and holding time, and the samples are compared with those conventionally heated. The novel technique allows for the fabrication of single-phase glass-ceramics with higher ionic conductivity than those prepared by conventional heating (2.26 10-4 S cm-1 and 1.36 10-4 S cm-1, respectively).

From pit fire to Ultrafast High-temperature Sintering (UHS): A review on ultrarapid consolidation

Milad Kermani et al.

Summary: Extreme heating and cooling rates have transformed materials manufacturing, with new techniques such as Ultrafast High-temperature Sintering (UHS) and Flash sintering (FS) shortening consolidation times by at least a thousand folds. The advantages of rapid sintering include suppressed grain growth, reduced loss of volatile elements, and limited interdiffusion in multi-layered devices, allowing the preparation of ceramics with unique properties. Rapid sintering also has the potential to decarbonize the sector and reduce emissions of toxic gases. This review explores the impact of extreme heating rates on sintering mechanisms and microstructural evolution throughout the three stages of sintering.

Ultra-fast high temperature sintering (UHS) of Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5P3O12 electrolyte: A rationalization of the heating schedule

Jinghua Wu et al.

Summary: The renewed interest in Fast Firing is due to the suppressed volatilization of Li and Na during short sintering cycles. Ultra-fast high temperature sintering is the latest development in Fast Firing, with heating rates reaching 10(4) degrees C/min. This study compared different heating schedules for consolidating electrolyte, and found that a hybrid combination of conventional sintering followed by ultra-fast high temperature sintering resulted in crack-free samples.

Summary: In flash sintering experiments, the effect of temperature on the flash sintering of yttria-stabilized zirconia was examined. It was found that slower heating rates maximize final density, but processes that are too slow lead to grain growth. Except for grain boundary conductivity, most properties can be attributed to thermal profile.
