Catalytic ignition of CO over CuCeZr based catalysts: New insights into the support effects and reaction pathways

Running Kang et al.

Summary: The effects of catalyst support on the CO catalytic ignition performance and reaction pathways were investigated, and it was found that TiO2 or ZSM-5 supports promote copper dispersion and the oxidation process mainly occurs at the phase interface. The Cu and Ce interactions lead to the formation of solid solutions, which enhance the activity of individual copper sites and favor the ignition of CO at low temperatures. The Cu2+ species are reduced to form dicarbonyls, which also take part in the oxidation process.

An integrated modeling method for membrane reactors and optimization study of operating conditions

Xin-Yuan Tang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an integrated membrane reactor modeling method based on thermodynamic equilibrium to investigate the enhancement potential of membrane reactors. The modeling method applies MATLAB codes to calculate local reaction equilibrium and determine product separation. Through parametric analysis and optimization by GA and NSGA-II, it is found that pressure-driven hydrogen recovery enhancement is the key to improving membrane reactor performance. The results provide reference conditions for theoretical reactor design.

Recycling process development with integrated life cycle assessment - a case study on oxygen transport membrane material

Melanie Johanning et al.

Summary: The development of a circular economy based on sustainable technologies requires the integration of materials recycling and a minimal environmental impact. This study demonstrates the integration of life cycle assessment (LCA) into the development of a chemical (recycling) process, showing that recycling reduces the environmental impact. These results encourage the integration of LCA as a standard method in the development of sustainable chemical processes.

A review on dual-phase oxygen transport membranes: from fundamentals to commercial deployment

Ragnar Kiebach et al.

Summary: Oxygen transport membranes (OTMs) are a promising technology for oxygen production, offering lower costs and power consumption compared to cryogenic air separation or pressure swing adsorption. Dual-phase OTMs, composed of a stable ionic conductor and electronic conductor composite, have advantages over single-phase membranes in terms of chemical and mechanical stability. However, challenges remain in their large-scale employment.

Oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) conversion into C2 products through a CO2/O2 co-transport membrane reactor

Kangkang Zhang et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new membrane reactor that captures CO2 and O-2 from flue gas and uses them to convert methane into ethane and ethylene. The reactor achieves higher selectivity of the C-2 products by reducing the oxidizing power of the oxidant and lowering the local oxygen partial pressure. Experimental results using a button-type membrane reactor with a diluted methane and argon mixture as the feedstock show a 12% C-2 yield and approximately 57% C-2 selectivity.

CFD modeling of the perovskite hollow fiber membrane modules for oxygen separation

Bing Feng et al.

Summary: A 3D model based on the computational fluid dynamic method is developed to investigate perovskite hollow fiber membrane modules for oxygen separation. Increasing the vacuum level on the permeate side is more effective in improving oxygen separation rate, while preheating the air feed also significantly enhances the module's oxygen separation performance.

Thermochemical solar-driven reduction of CO2 into separate streams of CO and O2 via an isothermal oxygen-conducting ceria membrane reactor

Stephane Abanades et al.

Summary: CO2 single-step thermolysis was achieved using oxygen permeable MIEC membranes made of ceria for separate production of CO and O-2. Concentrated solar energy was used as a renewable thermal energy source, combined with a chemical potential gradient to drive the CO2 dissociation reaction. Continuous oxygen transfer across the membrane was achieved, and a novel solar chemical reactor design integrating a reactive ceria membrane was successfully demonstrated under real concentrated solar radiation, resulting in stable and unprecedented CO production rates.

A comprehensive comparative study of CO2-resistance and oxygen permeability of 60 wt % Ce0.8M0.2O2-δ (M = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd)-40 wt % La0.5Sr0.5Fe0.8Cu0.2O3-δ dual-phase membranes

Guoxing Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, dual-phase membranes were prepared using a combination of EDTA-citric acid complexing sol-gel and mechanical mixture method, and their oxygen permeability was systematically studied. Among the studied CMO-LSCFO dual-phase membranes, CGO-LSFCO exhibited the highest oxygen permeability, possibly due to the small particle size and high electronic conductivity of the CGO phase. This comprehensive comparative study identifies critical factors influencing oxygen permeability and may provide guidelines for designing high performance dual-phase oxygen transport membranes.

Permeation improvement of LCCF hollow fiber membranes by spinning and sintering optimization

Frederic Buck et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of grain size and wall thickness on the oxygen transport mechanism of (La0.6Ca0.4)(Co0.8Fe0.2)O3-delta hollow fiber membranes, revealing that larger grain sizes and thinner walls result in increased oxygen flux up to 6.2 ml min(-1) cm(-2) in a 50% CO2 atmosphere at 1000 degrees C. This suggests that grain boundaries act as oxygen diffusion barriers.
