Development of high strength large open porosity alumina ceramics using the sacrificial phase route: The role of the sacrificial phase fineness

Julian Alzukaimi et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to prepare porous aluminum oxide ceramics using sunflower seed husk powder as a pore-forming agent, and to investigate the effect of particle size on the physical and mechanical properties of the prepared ceramics. The results showed that both the content and fineness of the pore-forming agent affected the linear and volumetric shrinkage, as well as the total and open porosity of the porous alumina. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the fineness of the pore-forming agent influenced the size of the obtained pores. Therefore, controlling the content and fineness of the pore-forming agent can regulate the properties of the prepared porous alumina.

Fabrication and characterization of alumina and zirconia-toughened alumina porous structures

Raju Vemoori et al.

Summary: In this study, porous structures (foams) of alumina (Al2O3) and zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) were manufactured using the space holder technique. The foams were fabricated with different porosities by adding different sizes and volume percentages of polystyrene beads as space holders. The compressive behavior of the foams was investigated, and it was found that the compressive strength is influenced by porosity, pore size, pore size distribution, and pore wall thickness. Al2O3 foams with 20 vol% beads of 10 μm size exhibited the highest compressive strength of 700 MPa with low porosity and a higher pore wall thickness.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of cold sintered porous alumina ceramics

Bilyaminu Suleiman et al.

Summary: This study presents a new innovative approach to fabricate porous alumina ceramics using cold sintering process (CSP) with NaCl as pore forming agent. The effects of CSP and post-annealing temperature on the microstructure and mechanical strength were investigated. The results showed that the annealing process resulted in the formation of a porous Al2O3 structure, with a decrease in porosity and an increase in hardness and mechanical strength as the annealing temperature increased. BET analysis revealed a complex pore structure with micropores, mesopores, and macropores.
