Validity of the stress inversion of orientation data from a dike swarm with a radial-parallel pattern transition

Kentaro Ushimaru et al.

Summary: By analyzing the stress trajectories using 2D and 3D models, the orientation of stress and pressure in magma chambers was determined. The analysis results led to consistent conclusions regarding far-field stress orientation and pressure orientation.

Evidence of an active rift zone in the northern Okinawa Trough

Hiroki Minami et al.

Summary: This study discovered a tectonically and magmatically active rift zone in the northern part of the Okinawa Trough, named the Uji Rift, with characteristics of lava flows and underwater volcanoes. The rift was likely formed after rifting activity in the early or late Pleistocene, and shows evidence of active magmatism.

Arc-parallel shears in collisional orogens: Global review and paleostress analyses from the NW Lesser Himalayan Sequence (Garhwal region, Uttarakhand, India)

Tuhin Biswas et al.

Summary: There has been a recent resurgence of interest in hydrocarbon exploration in the Lesser Himalayan Sequence (LHS) among petroleum geoscientists. Understanding the paleostress regime and deformation mechanism are critical for understanding the structural geology of petroleum-bearing terrains. Arc-parallel shear is an important deformation process in orogeny, and its scale can vary from micro-mm to regional-scale. This study reviews the mechanisms and theories of arc-parallel shear in several orogens, including the Himalaya, and compiles a list of 44 worldwide locations with arc-parallel shear. The Himalayan mountain chain has been formed by continuous crustal shortening due to the collision between India and Eurasia, and the rock mass also experiences lateral escape along the orogenic trend. The flow of the rock mass is governed by the tectonic stress field. Field study and microstructural analysis in the northwest LHS in India reveal the occurrence of arc-parallel brittle and ductile shear movements, with different shear directions and origins related to stretching and shortening. The findings provide insights into the tectonic evolution of the Himalaya and have implications for hydrocarbon exploration in the region.

Teshima pyroclastics: Onset of characteristic Setouchi magmatism induced by slab melting at 14.8 Ma

Reina Nakaoka et al.

Summary: New research suggests that the pyroclastics and lava from Teshima Island in southwest Japan were produced at 14.6-14.8 million years ago due to slab melting and melt-mantle reactions, which is different from previous beliefs. This age is the oldest reported so far and may represent the onset of characteristic Setouchi magmatism following a major tectonic event.

Arc-parallel extension in preparation of the rotation of southwest Japan: Tectonostratigraphy and structures of the Lower Miocene Ichishi Group

Hideki Kinoshita et al.

Summary: Research indicates that during the Early Miocene, the southwest Japan arc experienced multi-directional extensional tectonics, leading to the formation of multiple grabens, with some basin-margin faults exhibiting strike-slip components. Field surveys revealed that a basin was composed of grabens formed along normal and sinistral strike-slip faults, with transtensional basin formation ceasing between 18 and 17.5 million years ago, transitioning into a sag basin.

Post-rift stress history of Southwest Japan inferred from early to middle Miocene intrusions and meso-scale faults in the Tajima-Myokensan area

Toshiki Haji et al.

Summary: Study of Miocene igneous dikes in Southwest Japan indicates NW-SE extension both before and after 15 Ma, contradicting the hypothesis that opening of the Japan Sea ended at that time. The results suggest that the region continued to undergo extension until around 13.5 Ma.
