Resource assessment of the Cerro Blanco geothermal system

Hernan Barcelona et al.

Summary: In the past three decades, studies have provided important information on volcanic activity and thermal anomalies in the southern Puna region of Argentina, particularly the Cerro Blanco volcanic complex. The research aims to estimate the power capacity of the Cerro Blanco geothermal system using two methods: conductive cooling of the magma chamber and the classical volumetric method. The results suggest that Cerro Blanco might have a power capacity of 6 MWe per km2 with a total capacity of 127 MWe, although these estimations should be interpreted cautiously.

The Relationship Between Inverted Normal Faults and Pure Thrusting During the Tectonic Inversion of the Domeyko Cordillera, Northern Chile: Structural and Seismic Interpretation and Analog Modeling Experiments

Cristopher Lopez et al.

Summary: The orogenic growth of the Domeyko Cordillera in northern Chile is caused by positive tectonic inversion. This study validates this interpretation through field data and 2-D reflection seismic profiles. Analog models were used to analyze the relationship between extensional structures, inversion structures, and pure thrust faulting. The study proposes a kinematic model that explains the structural styles observed in the Domeyko Cordillera.

Crustal anatomy and evolution of a subduction-related orogenic system: Insights from the Southern Central Andes (22-35°S)

Laura Giambiagi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Southern Central Andes using a new thermomechanical model and variations in tectonic shortening-thickening. The results show that low-strength zones in the upper-mid crust play a crucial role in triggering crustal shortening, uplift, and exhumation, as well as shallow crustal seismicity.

Complex Basement-Involved Contractional Structures in the Pre-Andean Basins of Northern Chile: A Review From Seismic Data

F. Martinez et al.

Summary: This study discusses the geometry and timing of basement-involved contractional structures in the Pre-Andean basins of northern Chile, attributing their formation to basin inversion. The structures, including reverse faults, inverted normal faults, and basement thrust ramps, are mainly located along the western and eastern edges of the basins. The results suggest that the contractional structures are not only generated by flat-slab subduction processes but also observed in other regions of northern Chile.

Role of cohesive discordant bodies on fault-and-thrust belts deformation pattern: an approach based on analogue modelling

Matias Villarroel et al.

Summary: In this study, analogue experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of cohesive bodies on the deformation pattern of a fold-and-thrust belt (FTB). The results showed that the structural pattern tends to curve around and migrate towards cohesive bodies, even when they are not exposed.

Architecture, Kinematics, and Tectonic Evolution of the Principal Cordillera of the Andes in Central Chile (∼33.5°S): Insights From Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology and Seismotectonics Implications

Veronica Mardones et al.

Summary: The study in central Chile reveals the tectonic evolution of the Andean Cordillera was influenced by inherited structures, resulting in a hybrid fold-and-thrust belt. The Neogene-Quaternary deformation in the region led to a minimum crustal shortening of 27-28 km, while the final uplift of the Andes is closely related to preexisting Mesozoic structures.
