Closely spaced modes of bridges estimated by a hybrid time-frequency method using a multi-sensor scanning vehicle: Theory and practice

Y. B. Yang et al.

Summary: A hybrid time-frequency method is proposed for accurately estimating the modal parameters of bridges, including closely spaced modes, by using a single-axle scanning vehicle fitted with multi sensors. The method combines wavelet transform (WT) and singular value decomposition (SVD) to accurately identify closely spaced modes. The feasibility of the method is verified through a numerical case, and a parametric study is conducted to confirm its robustness. The method is successfully applied to a field test of a three-span girder bridge in Xiamen, China, demonstrating its high accuracy in identifying modal parameters.

Recent Advances in Researches on Vehicle Scanning Method for Bridges

Z. L. Wang et al.

Summary: The vehicle scanning method (VSM) is an indirect approach for bridge measurement that does not require sensors to be mounted on the bridge but only on the test vehicle. It has been extensively applied in various aspects of bridge measurement, such as construction of mode shapes, identification of damping ratios, and detection of damages. The indirect method offers advantages in terms of mobility, economy, and efficiency compared to the conventional direct method. The VSM has seen significant growth in research, with lab experiments, field tests, and the incorporation of modern devices enhancing its capabilities.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive indirect method is proposed to estimate the dynamic characteristics and evaluate the element stiffness of a girder bridge. The novelty lies in using the dynamic interaction between two identical trailers and the bridge, making it easier to model and analyze the dynamic characteristics of the trailers. The proposed method performs well in various scenarios and has been validated through field testing.

A novel frequency-free movable test vehicle for retrieving modal parameters of bridges: Theory and experiment

Y. B. Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel method for bridge measurement using a frequency-free test vehicle in a parked state. The technique offers a trade-off between moving vehicle and fixed sensor techniques in terms of measurement speed and data quality, with the advantage of movability. The frequency-free test vehicle is able to accurately detect the frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios of bridges.

Bridge damage detection using reconstructed mode shape by improved vehicle scanning method

D. S. Yang et al.

Summary: This study adopts the improved vehicle scanning method (VSM) to monitor the structural health of bridges and identify their healthy and damaged states. The improved VSM uses an elliptic filter to obtain high-quality narrowband signals, which accurately reveal the vibration modes and damage locations in the bridges. It is shown that this improved VSM outperforms existing methods by directly pinpointing the damage locations with minimal postprocessing effort.
