Three-dimensional dynamic analysis of ancient buildings with novel high damping isolation trenches

Jin-bao Li et al.

Summary: A novel high damping isolation trench is proposed to improve the efficiency of conventional isolation trench and mitigate the impact of ground-borne vibration on buildings. Viscoelastic braces in the trench dissipate energy while providing supporting force. Two types of high damping isolation trenches, U-shaped and L-shaped, are designed based on actual ancient buildings to reduce damages caused by train-induced vibration. Experimental and computational results show that the viscoelastic braces effectively reduce acceleration and velocity responses of buildings, demonstrating superiority over linear-shaped trenches.

Mitigation of railway-induced vibrations by using periodic wave impeding barriers

Chao He et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an efficient analytical method to mitigate railway-induced vibrations using periodic barriers in a layered half-space. Numerical results demonstrate that the periodic distribution of barriers improves the mitigation efficiency, and increasing the number, size, and stiffness of barriers enhances the effect. The location of barriers and the stiffness of the upper soil layer also significantly affect the performance.

Seismic metamaterials: Generating low-frequency bandgaps induced by inertial amplification

Yi Zeng et al.

Summary: Seismic metamaterials have received significant attention in the past two decades due to their ability to control seismic surface waves. In this study, a new type of seismic metamaterial with a low-frequency bandgap induced by inertial amplification is proposed to isolate seismic surface waves. Experimental results using a metamaterial plate composed of 25 unit cells demonstrate the characteristics of the bandgap induced by inertial amplification. The imaging of flexural waves by a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer shows strong attenuation effects in the bandgap caused by the metamaterial plate. The broadband attenuation is investigated using two different types of unit cells. Finally, similar structures with inertial amplification are introduced to design seismic metamaterials for isolating seismic surface waves at low frequencies.

Development of Viscoelastic Damper Based on NBR and Organic Small-Molecule Composites

Teng Ge et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of novel Viscoelastic (VE) materials were produced by adding different types and amounts of organic small molecule modifiers to neat nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR). The mechanical properties of the VE materials were tested, and the most optimal formulation was selected for manufacturing a VE damper. The high energy dissipation capacity of the VE damper was confirmed, and a new mathematical model considering amplitude and frequency effects was proposed and validated.

Pillared elastic metasurface with constructive interference for flexural wave manipulation

Liyun Cao et al.

Summary: A new conceptual design of pillared elastic metasurface is proposed in this study to manipulate flexural waves in plates by considering constructive interference, overcoming the need for heavy grooving or drilling on plate structures. The coupling and phase shift mechanisms of transmitted waves across sub-units are analyzed to establish an analytical model for accurately predicting wave behavior. The design demonstrates deflecting and focusing functionalities, offering a new approach for broad applications of constructive interference in elastic metamaterials.

Lamb's problem for a half-space coupled to a generic distribution of oscillators at the surface

Xingbo Pu et al.

Summary: The study proposed an analytical framework to model the effect of single and multiple mechanical surface oscillators on the dynamics of vertically polarized elastic waves propagating in a half space. Results demonstrate that the approach can accurately model elastic waves interacting with single resonators, couples of resonators, and arrays of resonators, capturing complex dynamics phenomena such as wave conversion and wave localization.

Rayleigh waves in locally resonant metamaterials

Farhad Zeighami et al.

Summary: The study introduces an original dispersion relation for vertically polarized surface waves in resonant metamaterials, removing the constraint of metasurfaces. It shows the existence of a band gap in the spectrum of Rayleigh surface waves and investigates the impact of resonant layer thickness on frequency stop-band and wave attenuation. The research provides insights into mechanical waves in metamaterials and offers an analytical framework for vertically polarized surface waves in resonant and partially resonant waveguides.
