Deformation-induced martensite in 304 stainless steel during cavitation erosion: Effect on passive film stability and the interaction between cavitation erosion and corrosion

Z. X. Li et al.

Summary: The research investigated the effect of deformation-induced martensite on the corrosion behavior and the interaction between cavitation erosion (CE) and corrosion of 304 stainless steel (SS). It was found that the content of deformation-induced martensite showed a negative correlation with the pitting potential, while the corrosion current density and the carrier density increased with the prolongation of CE time, indicating a decreased stability of passive films. The results showed that deformation-induced martensite mainly affected the pure CE mechanical damage and that corrosion accelerated the material damage by reducing resistance to pitting and accelerating the formation and propagation of cracks around corrosion pits.

Corrosion Behavior of Passivated CUSTOM450 and AM350 Stainless Steels for Aeronautical Applications

Oliver Samaniego-Gamez et al.

Summary: Custom 450 stainless steel and AM 350 stainless steel are both precipitation hardening stainless steels widely used in aerospace applications. Passivated CUSTOM 450 stainless steel exhibited the best corrosion behavior, while AM 350 stainless steel is suitable for applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance simultaneously.

Corrosion Behavior of Passivated Martensitic and Semi-Austenitic Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel

Facundo Almeraya-Calderon et al.

Summary: This study conducted a passive layer state study on martensitic and semi-austenitic precipitation hardening stainless steels (PHSS) passivated in citric acid and nitric acid baths. The results showed that the semi-austenitic-NA-50 min-70 degrees C sample exhibited the best corrosion resistance behavior in both solutions.

Frequency-Time Domain Analysis of Electrochemical Noise of Passivated AM350 Stainless Steel for Aeronautical Applications

C. Gaona Tiburcio et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of AM 350 stainless steel passivated in citric acid and nitric acid solutions and subsequently exposed to NaCl and H2SO4 solutions was investigated. The results showed that samples passivated in citric acid exhibited better corrosion resistance compared to those passivated in nitric acid. Moreover, uniform corrosion was the predominant behavior in the NaCl electrolyte.

The Effect of Long-Term Ageing at 475 °C on Microstructure and Properties of a Precipitation Hardening MartensiticStainless Steel

Vlastimil Vodarek et al.

Summary: The effect of long-term ageing at 475 degrees C on the mechanical properties, microstructure, and substructure of CUSTOM 465(R) maraging stainless steel was investigated. The study identified the precipitation of nanometric particles of eta-Ni3Ti phase and the formation of nanometric Cr-rich alpha' particles during the ageing process. The fraction of reverted austenite gradually increased with time of ageing. The ageing resulted in a slight decline in strength and hardness, while the ductility and impact energy values remained almost unchanged.

A Comprehensive Investigation on the Effects of Surface Finishing on the Resistance of Stainless Steel to Localized Corrosion

Elena Messinese et al.

Summary: This research investigates the influence of surface roughness on the localized corrosion resistance of stainless steel. The results show that grinding processes can improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Surface finishing and alloy composition are both important factors in controlling the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

Experimental and numerical analysis of Pitting Corrosion in CUSTOM 450 Stainless Steel

Yousef Mollapour et al.

Summary: The study found that stress accelerates pitting corrosion growth in CUSTOM 450 stainless steel, leading to stress cracks forming in pits after a certain period of time. Comparisons between accelerated pitting time (simulation) at 350 mVSCE potential for stressed samples and samples with real operating conditions showed differences in the results.

Passivation behavior and surface chemistry of 316 SS in the environment containing Cl− and NH4+

Huiyun Tian et al.

Summary: The presence of NH4+ in the environment is found to enhance the formation of passive film on 316 stainless steel, increasing its corrosion resistance. This effect is attributed to the reduction in defect diffusion coefficient and the densification of the passive film surface layer.

Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of Laser Welded 2205 Duplex Stainless-Steel in Artificial Seawater Environment under Different Acidity and Alkalinity Conditions

Hany S. Abdo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the electrochemical corrosion behavior of laser welded 2205 duplex stainless-steel in artificial seawater with different pH values, showing a direct relationship between solution pH and film resistance, affecting pitting formation. Different bilayer structure composed of metal oxides was observed depending on the acidity or alkalinity level, with increased pitting in lower pH values and improved corrosion resistance in more alkaline solutions.
