Heteroatom-containing degradable polymers by ring-opening metathesis polymerization

Jiaxi Xu et al.

Summary: The incorporation of heteroatom-containing weak bonds along polymer backbones has become a popular tool to accelerate degradation. Many methods have been reported for the synthesis of degradable heteroatom-containing polymers based on step-growth polymerization and chain-growth ring-opening polymerization. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization has emerged as an approach for the synthesis of various types of degradable polymers. This review covers the synthesis of different heteroatom-containing degradable polymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization and their degradation mechanisms under different conditions.

In Situ P-Modified Hybrid Silica-Epoxy Nanocomposites via a Green Hydrolytic Sol-Gel Route for Flame-Retardant Applications

Aurelio Bifulco et al.

Summary: By chemically modifying epoxy matrix with reactive silicon and phosphorus precursors through a two-step green synthetic procedure, nanocomposites with intrinsic flame-retardant features can be obtained. These nanostructured hybrid materials exhibit organic and inorganic co-continuous phases, preventing dripping during vertical burning tests, forming a large amount of coherent char after combustion, and reducing the peak of heat release rate remarkably.

Progress in proton conducting sol-gel glasses

L. Joseph et al.

Summary: Sol-gel processed phosphosilicates have been extensively studied as proton conducting electrolytes for over 30 years. The hopping mechanism, in which protons hop from hydroxyl groups, is the most commonly claimed mechanism for proton conductivity in these materials. The conductivity at room temperature depends on relative humidity and chemical composition, and organic substitutions on the precursor increase the conductivity of the phosphosilicate gel.
