Short-term responses of soil carbon and nitrogen pools as well as their isotopic compositions to biochar applications in a suburban forest in subtropical Australia subjected to prescribed burning

Jiaping Yang et al.

Summary: Biochar has been widely recognized for its role in enhancing carbon sequestration and soil fertility over the long term. However, there is limited information regarding its short-term effects on soil carbon and nitrogen pools, especially in poor soils subjected to prescribed burning. A six-month field study in a suburban forest in subtropical Australia revealed that biochar application significantly decreased soil carbon and nitrogen pools, particularly at the 0-5 cm depth, in the third month after application.

Agro-residue biochar and N fertilizer addition mitigates CO2-C emission and stabilized soil organic carbon pools in a rain-fed agricultural cropland

Segun O. Oladele et al.

Summary: The study found that the combined application of biochar and N fertilizer can reduce CO2 emissions from croplands in sub-Saharan Africa under rainfed rice cultivation, increase essential labile C-org pools, protect labile C-org pools sensitive to losses, and sequester C-org with positive implications for global change mitigation and soil quality improvement.

Soil nitrification and nitrogen mineralization responded non-linearly to the addition of wood biochar produced under different pyrolysis temperatures

Ashrafun Nessa et al.

Summary: This study found that adding biochar in two different soil moisture conditions can reduce soil nitrogen transformation, especially improving nitrogen retention in forest soils. The results showed that the use of biochar within a pyrolysis temperature range of 600-700 degrees Celsius can enhance nitrification and nitrogen mineralization processes in the soil.
